The purpose of this thesis is to focus on the ‘system’ in the idol genre, a subgenre of contemporary fantasy web novels, to define the ‘system’ as a narrative device corresponding to an ‘omniscient narrator’, and, on this basis, to examine the process through which a master plot that articulates the genre tendencies of the idol genre is formed, as well as to elucidate its narrative significance.
Web novels constitute a form of digital narrative content that responds immediately to readers’ desires for reading. Unlike print literature, in which readers receive works published in a completed form, readers of web novels directly intervene in the serialization process through payments, views, comments, likes, and patronage, thereby participating with authors in the ongoing completion of the work. Based on the premise that such active readership shapes the narrative structure of web novels, the reading desires commonly observed among web novel audiences have converged into what is known as the ‘regression–possession–reincarnation code’. Previous studies of web novels have defined this code, composed of regression, possession, and reincarnation, as a narrative motif that reflects readers’ desire for vicarious satisfaction, achieved by momentarily escaping the burdens of everyday life, identifying with a protagonist endowed with exceptional abilities, and consuming a continuous stream of ‘cathartic’ narratives. Building on this perspective, further research has subdivided this motif into distinct types, including regression, possession, reincarnation, and dimensional travel, and has undertaken detailed analyses of web novel narrative structures. In addition, some studies have approached web novels from a gender-cultural perspective by classifying genres according to readers’ gender and preferences into female-oriented and male-oriented genres, while others have examined the ‘regression–possession–reincarnation code’ in relation to the processes through which web novel genres are formed and the characteristics that define them.
Contemporary fantasy is the genre most closely connected to the reality inhabited by its readers. As a hybrid genre formed through the combination of ‘modern-day settings’ and ‘fantasy’, contemporary fantasy predominantly depicts narratives in which a protagonist living in a present-day context comes to lead a life entirely different from the past through the ‘regression–possession–reincarnation code’ or analogous mechanisms. In this sense, the code functions as a connective link that binds the real world and fantasy into a single narrative continuum. Through this mechanism, the protagonist acquires overwhelming abilities within their existing reality, without relocating to another world or dimension. The imagination that everyone except the self continues to live the same life as yesterday, while only the reality upon which the protagonist stands is transformed, reflects readers’ desires for reading. Contemporary fantasy may therefore be understood as a genre in which the effects of the ‘regression–possession–reincarnation code’ are realized most dramatically, while simultaneously and directly embodying readers’ realistic desires.
Existing research on contemporary fantasy has largely focused on the processes through which the genre is formed and on the ways in which the ‘regression–possession–reincarnation code’ is employed within individual works, yet studies that take the idol genre, a subgenre of contemporary fantasy, as their primary object of analysis remain limited. In response, this thesis seeks to analyze the storytelling patterns of the idol genre and the master plot formed around the ‘system’ as a narrative device, and, through this analysis, to elucidate the narrative aesthetics that emerge from this structure. In web novels, the ‘system’ functions as a narrative motif that renders the abilities of the protagonist and other characters in quantified terms, much like the statistics assigned to game characters. In contrast to the prevailing view in prior scholarship that most web novel subgenres construct their master plots on the basis of the ‘regression–possession–reincarnation code’, the idol genre develops a novel form of master plot centered on the ‘system’. Moreover, the ‘system’ in the idol genre corresponds conceptually to an ‘omniscient narrator’ and is closely intertwined with the narrative form and compositional techniques of web novels. It may also be deployed as a reactive figure that temporarily transforms the genre or directly confronts the focal character. In such cases, the ultimate aim of the focal character in opposing the ‘system’ is not to become the most powerful being within the fictional world, as is typical of protagonists in other web novels, but rather to escape the domination of the ‘system’, which deprives the character of free will and wields the power of life and death, and to return to a world in which an ordinary daily life can be sustained.
Chapter II analyzes the types and characteristics of characters in the idol genre. As a subgenre of contemporary fantasy, the idol genre is set against the backdrop of real-world K-pop and depicts the process through which the focal character and the team to which they belong become ‘successful idols’. Idols are figures that absorb the desires of the public and are regarded by many as objects of admiration. The diverse forms of desire projected onto idols are naturally connected to the reading desires of web novel audiences, a linkage that has enabled the idol genre to establish itself as a consistently popular subgenre to the present day. After passing through the ‘regression–possession–reincarnation code’ and arriving at the present point in time, the focal character is assigned, through the ‘system’, the task of becoming a ‘successful idol’. This task is not the objective of the focal character alone but becomes a shared goal pursued collectively by the entire team. Accordingly, the narrative structure of the idol genre does not revolve around a single overpowering protagonist but is organized around the journey of a ‘group protagonist’, in which characters grow together while relying on one another with the focal character at the center. This constitutes one of the defining differences between the idol genre and other subgenres of contemporary fantasy. In addition, alongside the focal character and the idol characters positioned as a group protagonist, fandom characters function as absolute supporters. Within the narrative, fan communities and the opinions of the broader public outside the fandom are represented through a range of texts modeled on social media and online community posts. ‘Fan texts’ operate as objective indicators that reveal the social standing of the focal character and the group protagonist within the fictional reality of the work. As texts generated in cyberspace distinct from the physical world, ‘fan texts’ simultaneously function as spaces in which the fandom of the focal character and the collective protagonists engages in collective activity, while also maintaining close interactions with the ‘system’.
Chapter III analyzes patterns of plot realization in the idol genre. In reality, K-pop idols produce idol content that employs transmedia storytelling strategies, narrativizing every aspect of their activities. Within idol-genre web novels, similar strategies are adopted through the successive introduction of content that actively imitates idol media, and framed narratives are extensively employed to enhance readers’ immersion. In this way, the figure of the ‘idol on stage’ is rendered vividly and with a sense of realism through text alone, while the ‘idol off stage’, that is, the idol not as an object of worship but as a human being who struggles to escape the domination of the ‘system’, likewise functions as a central plot of the idol genre. The core of this plot lies in the introduction of another ‘regressor’ character who has experienced the ‘regression–possession–reincarnation code’ prior to the focal character. Following the appearance of this additional regressor, the ways in which the focal character and the regressor confront the code, as well as the choices they make at decisive moments, are revealed in an intersecting manner. Through this process, the emotional affect associated with the ‘regression–possession–reincarnation code’ is subverted, giving rise to a modern heroic narrative distinctive to the idol genre and simultaneously revealing its unique narrative aesthetics, which distinguish it from other subgenres of contemporary fantasy.
Chapter IV examines the ‘system’ as a narrative device in the idol genre. The ‘system’ in idol-genre web novels, which corresponds to an ‘omniscient narrator’, has its origins in game fantasy and functions as an entity that exercises god-like and absolute influence over the focal character, who serves as the work’s narratee. In the early episodes, the focal character is assigned by the ‘system’ a set of quests that must be completed within a specified period. In addition, the ‘system’ enables the focal character to directly check and verify both their own abilities and those of others through ‘status windows’, in which abilities are broken down and displayed using letters or other symbolic forms, and it may also provide supplementary abilities required to become a ‘successful idol’ in the form of ‘items’. Idol-genre web novels explicitly establish in their opening sections that the ‘system’ is the agent that executes the ‘regression–possession–reincarnation code’ and that it constitutes an absolute presence holding the power of life and death over the focal character. In this process, the ‘system’, upon its appearance, delivers to the focal character a task framed in the form of ‘if you fail to do this, you will die’. The message conveyed to the focal character bears a close resemblance to the nature of prophecy or divine oracle found in ancient Greek tragedy. The narrative structure in which the focal character, having received such a fatal ultimatum through the ‘system’ in the early episodes, overcomes the tragic destiny imposed upon them and achieves a return to an ordinary daily life functions as a master plot that articulates the defining tendencies of the idol genre.
This study aims to analyze the storytelling patterns of the idol genre by examining the ways in which the ‘system’ of web novels is employed within the idol genre, a subgenre of contemporary fantasy, and by analyzing the overall narrative structure of the works. Furthermore, by elucidating the process through which the task imposed by the ‘system’ in the form of ‘if you fail to do this, you will die’ coalesces into a master plot that articulates the defining tendencies of the idol genre, this study seeks to explore the distinctive narrative aesthetics unique to the idol genre, distinguishing it from other genres of contemporary fantasy.
