Oh Jung-Hee (1947–) developed her literary career against the backdrop of the tumultuous decades of the 1950s through the 1990s in Korean history, and presented female characters of various ages to explore the lives of Korean women in a comprehensive manner. The women in her works experience a double form of oppression caused by nationalist discourse and the patriarchal order. Although they attempt to speak, their utterances fail to reach others and are relegated to the position of the subaltern. Previous studies on Oh Jung-Hee's Novels have tended to focus on the speech and resistance of these women primarily as manifestations of madness or poetic figurations, or have examined them only within limited perspectives such as feminism, the family romance, the coming-of-age narrative, and psychoanalysis. Since the 1990s, feminist criticism has expanded interpretive horizons, and more recently, diverse studies have emerged that link Oh Jung-Hee's Novels to gender politics, diaspora, heterotopia, and disability. However, discussions that seriously connect Oh Jung-Hee's Novels with the concept of the subaltern still remain insufficient.
This study therefore examines the subalternity of female characters in Oh Jung-Hee's Novels, investigating how they are positioned within the complex structures of oppression produced by the state and patriarchy, and how they attempt speech and resistance within those structures.
Spivak’s question, “Can the Subaltern Speak?”, does not concern the mere possibility of speech itself but instead reveals how the utterances of subordinate subjects are always distorted or re-represented within the frameworks of the Other. Applying this critical perspective to Oh Jung-Hee's Novels, the present study analyzes the ways in which the speech and resistance of female characters appear, and how they are blocked or misinterpreted by institutional and discursive oppression.
Chapter II identifies how state power and patriarchy collude in Oh Jung-Hee's Novels to impose a dual oppression on women. These two systems of power control women’s bodies and language, permitting them only a subsidiary role as helpers to men, thereby further solidifying their position as female subalterns. The chapter analyzes how female subalterns are pushed into a state of unrepresentability within these mechanisms of dual oppression.
Chapter III examines the ways in which female subalterns attempt diverse forms of speech despite the conditions of enforced silence. Even within this imposed muteness, female subalterns practice indirect modes of speaking by navigating the narratives of fairy tales and legends, and at times withdraw into their inner world to discover imagistic forms, transforming these into sources for writing.
Chapter IV evaluates the values and limits of female subaltern resistance. The “game” within the narratives functions as a space where female subalterns can temporarily recover language and subjectivity, yet its transience and instability reveal clear limitations in generating tangible change in reality. The chapter also analyzes instances where female subalterns, whose speech is obstructed, attempt to resist through acts rather than words. By tracing dharmic resistance—which demands the restoration of damaged ethical order—and semiotic resistance, which ruptures the external world through explosive affect, the study identifies the inherent limitations that arise from the discontinuous nature of subaltern resistance.
This study investigates how female subalterns in Oh Jung-Hee's Novels attempt speech and resistance under the double oppression of the state and patriarchy, only to encounter structural limits. Tracing their speech and resistance renders visible a critical reflection on the power structures of Korea’s turbulent historical period and reveals that female subjects actively sought avenues of escape. Furthermore, by rereading Oh Jung-Hee's Novels within the horizon of subaltern discourse, this study aims to propose new possibilities for analysis within Korean women’s literary studies.
