This study aims to explore the experiences and perceptions of first-grade elementary school children and their mothers regarding the Early Childhood–Elementary School Transition and to seek practical measures for its implementation based on these findings. To this end, an explanatory sequential design was applied to collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data in stages, providing a multi-layered understanding of the current status of the transition.
To explore the current status, limitations, and practical measures based on the experiences of first-grade children and their mothers, the following research questions were established:

    1. What is the current status of the Early Childhood–Elementary School Transition as revealed through the experiences of first-grade mothers?
    2. How do mothers of first-grade students experience the Early Childhood–Elementary School Transition in terms of the meanings they attribute to it, and what limitations and practical measures emerge through this process?
    3. How do first-grade children experience the Early Childhood–Elementary School Transition in terms of the meanings they construct, and what limitations and practical measures emerge through this process?

To address these questions, a survey was first conducted with 110 mothers to identify the overall status of the transition. Subsequently, a Focus Group Interview (FGI) was conducted with five mothers, and individual interviews were held with three children to explore in-depth contexts and meanings not captured by quantitative data. Quantitative data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0 for frequency and descriptive statistics, while open-ended responses were visualized using a word cloud generator. Qualitative data were analyzed based on transcripts and researcher notes through a process of repetitive reading, segmenting, coding, and categorization to derive upper and lower categories.
The findings of this study are as follows. First, the experiences of mothers of first-grade elementary school children revealed the overall status of the Early Childhood–Elementary School Transition, including their perceptions of the transition, current implementation practices, and support needs.
Second, mothers tended to perceive the transition primarily as a preparatory process for elementary school entry and identified the psychological pressure associated with the elementary school environment and the lack of continuity between early childhood and elementary education as major limitations of the transition. In response, they suggested strengthening individualized support for children, improving parents’ access to relevant information, and establishing transition-support spaces within elementary schools.
Third, children demonstrated a more positive perception of early childhood education settings than of elementary schools and experienced limitations stemming from insufficient continuity between early childhood and elementary education. Children expressed a desire for their learning experiences to be meaningfully connected across the transition, recognizing the need for play-based preparatory activities in early childhood settings and more flexible daily routines in elementary schools.
Drawing on the lived experiences of children and their mothers as the primary stakeholders in the transition process, this study highlights that the burden and anxiety experienced during the transition are not merely individual issues but are produced within educational systems and broader social structures. By doing so, the study contributes to the literature by proposing practical directions for child-centered transition support that ensures developmental continuity. These findings suggest that research on the Early Childhood–Elementary School Transition should move beyond policy-driven or institutional frameworks and adopt a child-centered perspective. Accordingly, future research should conceptualize children not as passive recipients of transition support but as active and agentic participants in education, and continue to incorporate children’s voices and experiences into transition-related research.
