This study explores how the meaning of “spa” has evolved in contemporary Korean society and examines the cultural specificities that emerge from these shifts. Earlier research has largely emphasized measurable outcomes such as customer satisfaction or revisit intention, leaving the emotional, relational, ritualistic, and cultural layers of spa experiences relatively unexplored. To address this gap, the present study employed Reflexive Thematic Analysis (R-TA) proposed by Braun and Clarke to interpret the structural and cultural meanings embedded in changing perceptions of spa concepts.
Participants included ten female users who had regularly visited day spas for more than five years and ten female spa managers with over a decade of professional experience. Users were recruited through snowball sampling, while managers were selected via purposive sampling. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted for approximately 60 to 90 minutes per participant. All interviews were transcribed and rechecked to ensure reliability.
The analysis followed the six phases of R-TA—immersion in the data, initial coding, identifying core meanings, categorizing experiential patterns, articulating insights and themes, and developing discussion and implications. Throughout the analytic process, the researcher maintained reflective memos. To ensure rigor and trustworthiness, Lincoln and Guba’s criteria (credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability) were applied alongside triangulation across data, researchers, methods, and theories. Finlay’s 4R principles—Rigour, Resonance, Reflexivity, and Relevance—were also integrated throughout the analysis. Member checking, peer debriefing, and comparative review were employed to enhance transparency and interpretive accuracy.
The findings revealed several notable shifts. First, spa users reframed the spa not merely as a place for physical rejuvenation but as a site for emotional recovery, psychological balance, and self-care, embedding spa visits into their everyday routines. Second, managers reconceptualized their occupation as an “emotional profession” that merges technical skills with relational, ethical, and affective competencies. They regarded empathy and trust-building as central to professional identity. Third, the cultural specificity of spa experiences took shape through the Korean notion of Jeong—with users positioned as those who experience Jeong and managers as those who enact it—forming a multi-layered cultural structure where emotion, ritual, sensibility, care, and relationship circulate. Finally, the integrated analysis across both groups revealed a mutually reinforcing cycle of healing shaped by sincerity, warmth, consideration, and attentiveness, suggesting that spas in Korea serve as emotional ecosystems where relationships and affective states are restored.
Overall, perceptions of the spa were shown to evolve from a focus on physical care to a source of emotional stability and daily restoration, and further into a cultural practice that helps individuals regulate and sustain their everyday lives. Users came to view spa visits as essential rather than indulgent, while practitioners recognized their role as providers of emotional care. Although users and practitioners formed distinct meaning systems, their experiences intersected through shared affective and relational processes. This study demonstrates that spas in Korea represent not merely service environments but core spaces within Korean-style wellness culture where emotional exchange and relational healing are continuously produced.
