Despite continuous improvements in teacher qualifications, teaching
resources, and classroom conditions in most OECD countries over the past
two decades, the overall performance in student mathematical literacy has
shown a downward trend. Concurrently, stu dents’ perception of teacher
support has significantly declined. PISA 2022 is situated in a post- pandemic
era deeply integrated with technology- intensive learning, where the function
of teacher support has shifted from traditional classroom instruction to cross
platform learning guidance and strategic regulation. Amidst these global
challenges, Hong Kong (China), Macao (China), and Chinese Taipei
maintained world- leading mathematics performance in PISA 2022. However,
these regions also revealed intensified pressure regarding educational equity
and an emotional paradox characterized by "high achievement — low
motivation/high anxiety." Students in these regions exhibit prevalent
mathematics anxiety, while their learning interest and self - efficacy remain
below the international average, posing potential risks to sustainable student
development. Existing research has mostly remained at the level of single -
region descriptions or macro- comparisons, lacking a systematic explanation
of the "teacher support — psychological factors — academic achievement"
mechanism specifically within these high - achieving, culturally similar
Chinese regions.
Based on PISA 2022 data from Hong Kong, Macao, and Chinese Taipei,
this study aims to systematically reveal the internal psychological and
behavioral mechanisms by which mathematics teacher support influences
student mathematical literacy. It focuses on testing the triple mediating effects
of mathematics self- efficacy, mathematics anxiety, and active mathematics
learning behavior between teacher support and mathematics achievement.
The study addresses three core questions: (1) Does teacher support still have
a significant net effect on student mathematics achievement within the high
achievement, high- pressure cultural context of these regions? (2) Does
teacher support operate synergistically on academic performance through
cognitive (self- efficacy), affective (anxiety), and behavioral (active learning)
pathways? (3) Can teacher support effectively mitigate the structural "high
achievement— high anxiety" paradox and activate students' active learning
behaviors, thereby promoting the development of non - routine problem
solving abilities? Through this analysis, the study attempts to bridge the gap
in explaining the mechanism of teacher support in high - achieving Chinese
mathematics learning contexts.
The study utilized data from 16,148 students in Hong Kong, Macao, and
Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) from the PISA 2022 database. Robust estimation
was achieved using complex sampling weights (W_FSTUWT), 10 Plausible
Values (PVs) for mathematics achievement, and Balanced Repeated
Replication (BRR) weights. Following weighted descriptive statistics and
correlation analysis, Mplus 8.3 was employed to construct a Latent Variable
Structural Equation Model (SEM). The analysis utilized TYPE = COMPLEX to
account for scho ol- level clustering effects and systematically tested the
direct effect of teacher support on mathematics achievement, as well as its
multiple mediating effects through mathematics self- efficacy, mathematics
anxiety, and mathematics perseverance (active learning behavior). Reliability,
convergent validity, discriminant validity, and model fit were tested to ensure
the statistical rigor of the measurement and structural models.
The results showed that teacher support had a significant positive total
effect on mathematics achievement (B = 13.396, β = .125, p < .001).
Mediation analyses indicated that this effect was largely indirect, with the total
indirect effect (B = 9.000, β = .084, p < .001) accounting for 67.2% of the
total effect, while the direct effect remained smaller but significant (B = 4.396,
β = .041, p < .001), supporting a partial mediation model. Overall, the model
explained 12.7% of the variance in mathematics achievement (R² = .127).
Among the specific mediating mechanisms, mathematics self - efficacy
emerged as the most influential mediator. Teacher support exerted a
significant indirect effect on mathematics achievement through enhancing
students’ mathematics self- efficacy (B = 4.026, β = .038, p < .001),
accounting for 30.1% of the total effect. In addition, teacher support indirectly
promoted mathematics achievement by reducing mathematics anxiety (B =
1.615, β = .015, p < .001; mediation proportion = 12.1%) and by enhancing
mathematics learning motivation and persistence (B = 3.358, β = .031, p
< .001; mediation proportion = 25.1%). All three mediating pathways reached
statistical significance, indicating that teacher support influences students’
academic performance through multiple, complementary psychological
mechanisms.
Further multi- group structural equation modeling was conducted to examine
potential cross- regional differences among samples from Taiwan, Hong Kong,
and Macao. The results showed that teacher support significantly predicted
mathematics self- efficacy ( β = . 107 – .173), mathematics anxiety (β =
−.098 – −.157), and mathematics learning motivation/persistence ( β
= .286 – .346) across all three regions, demonstrating the cross - regional
stability of the proposed psychological mechanisms. Regarding the prediction
of mathematics achievement, mathematics self - efficacy exerted the
strongest effect in the Taiwan sample ( β = .310), whereas mathematics
anxiety showed the most pronounced negative effect in the Hong Kong sample
(β = −.208). After controlling for the mediators, the direct effect of teacher
support on mathematics achievement remained statistically significant but
relatively weak in the Taiwan and Hong Kong samples, whereas it was no
longer significant in the Macao sample, suggesting an almost complete
mediation patern in that context.
Moreover, cross- group latent mean comparisons revealed that students
in Hong Kong and Macao reported significantly lower latent means of
perceived teacher support than those in Taiwan (z = −12.90 and −19.67,
respectively; both p < .001), indicating systema tic differences in students’
experiences of teacher support across educational contexts.
Overall, the findings consistently support a theoretical model applicable
across regions, in which teacher support primarily promotes students ’
mathematics achievement indirectly by enhancing mathematics self - efficacy,
reducing mathematics anxiety, and strengthening learning motivation and
persistence. At the same time, the relative strength of specific pathways is
moderated by regional and educational– cultural contexts. These results not
only deepen the understanding of the mechanisms through which teacher
support influences academic performance but also provide important empirical
implications for instructional interventions and teacher professional
development across different educational settings.
