Driven by global carbon neutrality policies and the expansion of renewable energy, the integration of diverse distributed energy resources (DERs), including photovoltaics, into distribution systems is increasing rapidly. This environmental shift has transformed traditionally passive unidirectional grids into active environments where bidirectional power flows coexist, leading to frequent reverse power flow when generation exceeds load demand. Particularly, when the generation current of DERs cancels out the actual load current, it becomes impossible to clearly distinguish between actual load fluctuations and changes in generation based solely on the current measured at the substation. Consequently, conventional line drop compensation (LDC) methods—designed for unidirectional flow with fixed line impedance parameters (R_set, X_set)—fail to estimate the remote voltage accurately, leading to unnecessary tap operations that cause mechanical wear and shorten the lifespan of critical equipment such as on-load tap changers (OLTC).
To overcome these physical limitations, a technique to optimize R_set and X_set—core variables determining LDC control precision—in real-time using the CatBoost machine learning algorithm is proposed. SCADA and meteorological data obtainable at the substation are utilized as input variables to dynamically infer optimal parameters suited for bidirectional flow conditions. By adopting a control structure that maintains existing control logic while updating only the parameters, operational uncertainties associated with the black-box nature of artificial intelligence models are eliminated, ensuring high control reliability.
The effectiveness was demonstrated through scenarios based on 12 years (2013–2024) of actual electricity demand and meteorological data from the Jeju region. Ten years of data (2013–2022) were used for model training, and simulations were performed on the remaining two years (2023–2024) to verify performance. The results showed that the proposed method improved the mean absolute error (MAE) of voltage estimation by 85.57% and reduced the standard deviation of estimation errors by approximately 71% compared to conventional methods.
Furthermore, regarding equipment operation, the number of OLTC tap operations was reduced by 24.8%, and the frequency of malfunctions caused by misjudging the voltage state decreased by 82.4%. These findings suggest that both voltage quality assurance and equipment longevity can be achieved solely through software algorithm enhancement without the need for expensive hardware infrastructure.
