The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of traumatic experience on posttraumatic growth among North Korean defectors and to analyze the moderated dual mediating effects of self-disclosure through intrusive and deliberate rumination on the relationship between traumatic experience and posttraumatic growth. The research questions addressed are as follows: First, how does self-disclosure moderate the effect of intrusive rumination on deliberate rumination in North Korean defectors? Second, how does self-disclosure moderate the mediating effect of intrusive rumination on the relationship between traumatic experience and deliberate rumination in North Korean defectors? Third, how does self-disclosure moderate the dual mediating effects of intrusive and deliberate rumination on the relationship between traumatic experience and posttraumatic growth in North Korean defectors?
This study was conducted using self-report surveys with 340 adult North Korean defectors residing in South Korea, including Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, and Gyeongsang Province. Of the 340 questionnaires returned (146 online, 194 offline), 130 were excluded due to random responding or having one or more missing responses. A total of 210 questionnaires (86 online, 124 offline) were used for analysis. Data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 26.0, including descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, independent-samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé's test, and Pearson's correlation analysis. The PROCESS macro (version 4.2) for SPSS was used to analyze and verify the moderating effect (Model 1), moderated mediation effect (Model 14), and moderated dual mediating effect (Model 91).
The main findings of this study are as follows. First, self-disclosure significantly moderated the effect of intrusive rumination on deliberate rumination in North Korean defectors. The more self-disclosure North Korean defectors engaged in, the more intrusive rumination was associated with higher deliberate rumination, strengthening the process of transitioning from intrusive rumination to deliberate rumination. This positive moderating effect of self-disclosure was confirmed. Second, the moderated mediating effect of self-disclosure through intrusive rumination on the relationship between traumatic experience and deliberate rumination was significant. Specifically, as the level of traumatic experience increased, both intrusive rumination and deliberate rumination increased. Furthermore, the positive effect of intrusive rumination on deliberate rumination increased as the level of self-disclosure increased. Third, the moderated dual mediating effect of self-disclosure through intrusive and deliberate rumination on the relationship between traumatic experience and posttraumatic growth was significant. Specifically, as the level of traumatic experience increased, the levels of intrusive rumination, deliberate rumination, and posttraumatic growth increased. Furthermore, as the level of self-disclosure increased, the effect of intrusive rumination on deliberate rumination increased, and the effect of deliberate rumination on posttraumatic growth also increased. In other words, the moderated dual mediating effect of self-disclosure through intrusive rumination and deliberate rumination on the impact of traumatic experience on posttraumatic growth in North Korean defectors was significantly positive.
This study extends prior research that has partially examined the roles of rumination and self-disclosure in posttraumatic growth(PTG) among North Korean defectors, by comprehensively analyzing and empirically testing the interaction between cognitive rumination processes and self-disclosure behaviors in the relationship between trauma experience and PTG. This study also holds theoretical and practical significance by providing concrete evidence for psychotherapeutic interventions through an in-depth understanding of the posttraumatic growth mechanisms among North Korean defectors.
