Amid rapid socio-cultural changes, the parent–child relationship has become increasingly important for children’s emotional and relational development. This study examined how the parent–child relational context is reflected in children’s language by exploring the linguistic and emotional meaning structures embedded in children’s narratives, using an AI-based relational structure diagnostic model. Conventional assessments of parent–child relationships often rely on self-report questionnaires or observer-centered interpretations, which limits their ability to explain children’s emotional and relational experiences as expressed in language. Accordingly, this study sought to establish an analytic framework that captures how emotional meanings and relational experiences embedded in children’s statements are organized through language within the parent–child relationship context.
Participants were 50 elementary school children (Grades 3–6) receiving play therapy. Children’s narratives were collected as primary data through the AI-based relational structure diagnostic model developed by Choi (2025). The model uses chatbot-based interaction to elicit spontaneous verbal responses, and the collected narratives were organized according to the model’s classification into functional and dysfunctional parent–child relationship types. Text-mining techniques were then applied to examine the structure of the language data, including word frequency analysis, TF–IDF-based keyword extraction, topic modeling to derive thematic structures, and semantic network analysis to identify co-occurrence patterns and centrality in word connections. Through these procedures, the study explored, at multiple levels, how emotional and relational meanings are organized within children’s linguistic expressions.
The findings were as follows. First, across all children’s narratives, references to parents functioned as an emotional anchor, indicating a common tendency for language to be organized around parents as a central emotional reference point. In the functional relationship type, emotional, relational, and social meanings were organized within an interconnected structure, and positive emotional expressions and interaction-oriented vocabulary were prominent. Topic modeling indicated themes such as parental identification, experiences of protection, emotional stability, and empathy as developmentally supportive content, and semantic network analysis showed that emotion- and relationship-related words were organized in a relatively cohesive manner. Second, in the dysfunctional relationship type, children’s emotional expressions tended to appear in conditional, indirect, explanatory, and symbolic forms, and emotional and need-related meanings were partially organized within localized network structures. Topic modeling highlighted themes reflecting tension and constraint in the relational context, including emotional distance, indirect wishes, and limited emotional sharing.
Overall, these results suggest that children’s emotional experiences within the parent–child relationship context can be organized and expressed through linguistic meaning structures. By linking the model’s classification outcomes with language-based evidence, this study provides a foundation for interpreting AI-based relational assessment results and strengthens the interpretability of such evaluations. The findings also offer practical implications for counseling, education, and child welfare settings by providing baseline information useful for understanding children’s emotional clarity and tendencies toward indirect expression when setting intervention goals. Considering limitations related to the sample scope, individual differences in narrative length and quality, and reliance on language data, future studies should expand samples and integrate multi-source data to refine applicability.
