Individuals live with both explicit and implicit secrets, and those formed within the
family often leave deep marks that extend beyond the personal domain to shape
relationships and identity. In Korean society, divorce remains a topic easily concealed
under stigma and prejudice. When parental divorce becomes a family secret rather
than an openly explained event, children sense the changes yet are left to construct
their own interpretations. Such experiences may foster internalized anxiety and
confusion, while simultaneously functioning as strategies for relational preservation or
self-protection. This study originates from an interest in these complex dynamics
where suppression and protection intersect within family secrets.
The purpose of this study was to explore how the experience of parental divorce,
when it is concealed as a family secret or maintained through silence, is internalized
and given meaning in the lives of adult children. It also sought to examine how these
experiences leave traces in the processes of relational formation, identity change, and
reconstruction. The study further explored how participants navigated and
reinterpreted experiences of silence that were maintained not only within the family
but also in external relationships due to social stigma or discrimination. Two research
questions guided the inquiry: (1) How are family secrets surrounding parental divorce
remembered and narrated by the participants? (2) What meanings do these family
secret experiences hold for the participants’ lives and identities?
The participants were three adult women (A, B, and C) who had experienced
parental divorce and family secrets. Although they lived within different life contexts,
they all shared the experience of revisiting and reinterpreting past family secrets in
adulthood. Narrative inquiry was employed as the research method, and Clandinin
and Connelly’s three-dimensional narrative inquiry space, which includes temporality,
sociality, and place, provided the analytical framework. This approach illuminated how
participants articulated and reinterpreted their past experiences and how meanings of
identity and relationships emerged through this process.
Findings revealed that the long-term concealment of parental divorce influenced
participants’ identity formation and relational patterns. The silence surrounding
divorce generated emotional suppression and relational disconnection, yet it also
operated as a protective mechanism aimed at maintaining family stability.
Participants’ narratives were organized around three thematic streams. First, the lack
of explicit explanation about the divorce led to experiences of silence and emotional
restraint, while simultaneously exposing the complex emotions involved in maintaining
family cohesion. Second, family secrets led individuals to hide aspects of themselves
in social relationships and contributed to ongoing confusion in their sense of identity.
Third, at key life transitions such as independence, romantic relationships, and
marriage, the family secret resurfaced and was reinterpreted, leading to emotional
release and expanded self-understanding through the act of speaking.
This study demonstrates that parental divorce functions as a narrative process in
which adult children continuously reconstruct their relationships and identities over
time. It also suggests that parental divorce, when hidden through silence, may
become a psychological and relational trace that can be transmitted across
generations. Moreover, the process of gaining the ability to speak about family
secrets can serve as a catalyst for self-reflection and emotional recovery. By
illuminating how parental divorce becomes embedded in children’s lives, this study
provides foundational insights for developing relevant programs in family counseling
    and psychological intervention
