This study aims to explore the conditions under which relational formation and emotional interactions emerge and unfold between mentors and mentees within mentoring programs for youth under protective disposition. While the existing juvenile protection system has largely focused on outcome-oriented goals such as compliance with dispositions and recidivism prevention, it has been criticized for its limited ability to capture youths’ emotional experiences and the contextual processes of relationship formation through predominantly quantitative approaches. To address this limitation, the present study adopts attachment theory, social bond theory, and social support theory as its analytical framework and conducts an in-depth, case-centered analysis to examine how mentoring provides youth under protective disposition with an emotional secure base, facilitates the restoration of social bonds, and enables the reconstruction of relational experiences.
Using a case study methodology, the study selected two mentors and two mentees who participated in a mentoring program following protective disposition and conducted in-depth interviews with all participants. The collected data were analyzed through open coding and categorization processes, leading to the identification of patterns in relational development and the meaning structures of emotional interaction.
The findings indicate that mentoring relationships undergo a staged transformation, beginning with trust-building, followed by increasing emotional openness and reciprocity, progressing toward relational stability and maturity, and ultimately securing sustainability and ethical balance through boundary practices. A critical turning point emerged when relational agency shifted from triadic encounters involving program staff to direct one-on-one interactions, accompanied by the expansion of conversational initiative and thematic scope. Behavioral enactments of care—such as accompanying mentees to ceremonial or significant events—triggered a sense of psychological family belonging and affiliation. Repeated, predictable time management practices, including regular meetings, advance notification, and apologies for lateness, fostered emotional presence and constructed a temporal structure of trust. Psychological safety generated through judgment suspension and attentive listening was linked to enhanced self-regulation behaviors, such as recommitment to promises and proactive communication. Limited mentor self-disclosure functioned as a catalyst that transformed hierarchical advice into emotional reciprocity. Low-intensity support that maintained relational continuity without excessive intervention during periods of avoidance or disengagement preserved the possibility of relational restoration, while ethical boundaries—such as refraining from social media connections, financial transactions, and excessive self-disclosure—prevented overdependence and sustained safe intimacy. Although the presence of program staff initially functioned as an emotional secure base, their gradual withdrawal as relationships deepened contributed to the expansion of autonomy and relational agency. Even after program termination, accumulated emotional experiences and symbolic memories from mentor interactions remained as internalized resources for mentees, reemerging in later decision-making and interpersonal contexts. These findings demonstrate that mentoring relationships can be transformed from temporary interventions into enduring forms of relational and emotional capital.
Overall, mentoring for youth under protective disposition functions not merely as a mechanism for short-term behavioral regulation but as a relational learning context through which norms of trust, respect, and responsibility are internalized experientially. When time- and action-based evidence of care, ethical safeguards grounded in boundaries and non-intrusive empathy, and a phased transition from triadic safety structures to autonomous dyadic relationships are integrated, relational agency, safety, and sustainability can be simultaneously secured. These findings underscore the need to institutionalize relational experiences as core components in the design and operation of mentoring programs and highlight the importance of lightweight follow-up systems in the aftercare phase to support the continued functioning of relational memories as psychological and social resources.
