This dissertation aims to reconsider the films of Michael Haneke beyond language- and narrative-centered interpretations, approaching them instead through the ethical structure of cinematic experience grounded in pre-linguistic perception and embodied sensation. To this end, it critically examines the philosophical tradition shaped by Cartesian dualism and linguistic centrism, which has historically subordinated the body and the senses, and reestablishes the body as the fundamental subject of world-experience and meaning-making on the basis of Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception. His concepts of flesh and chiasm enable perception to be understood not as a relationship between a detached subject and object, but as an event in which body and world intersect and emerge through mutual entanglement.
This perspective is extended to the domain of cinematic experience through discussions of sensory cinema. Sensory cinema conceives film not as a medium of representation or narrative transmission, but as a sensory field that directly addresses the spectator’s body, redefining cinematic ethics not in terms of message or identification but in terms of sensory involvement and embodied response.
On the basis of this theoretical framework, this dissertation analyzes the nullification of language, the reduction of narrative, and the emphasis on bodily sensation in Haneke’s films. In his cinema, language functions less as a generator of meaning than as a device that distances sensory events, while silence, gaze, and bodily arrangement operate as key mediators of meaning. The invisibility of violence, cold imagery, and static framing displace the spectator from a position of safe observation, producing a sensory tension that forces a bodily confrontation with otherness.
In conclusion, by reading Haneke’s films within the context of sensory cinema, this study demonstrates that cinema can function as a medium that thinks the world and the other through embodied perception beyond language and narrative, and it proposes the possibility of redefining cinematic ethics at the level of sensation and response.
