This paper proposes a model-based optimal torque control approach for a dynamometer system and verifies its effectiveness through both controller design based on system modeling and experimental validation on real hardware. The dynamometer actuator consists of a motor–harmonic drive system, which poses challenges for precise torque control due to the compliance of the reduction gear, nonlinear friction, and noise characteristics of the torque sensor. To address these issues, this study adopts an integrated approach encompassing system modeling, controller design, and sensor signal conditioning with noise reduction techniques.
First, the structure of the motor–harmonic drive system is analyzed, and an equivalent model is derived by considering the stiffness of the reduction gear and torque transmission characteristics. In addition, a model incorporating the dynamic behavior of the torque sensor is developed, and the overall system is integrated into a single block diagram. An integral control scheme is then designed for torque control, where the feedback gains that determine the system poles are obtained based on a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) framework. By employing an augmented state-space model that includes integral states, it is theoretically shown that steady-state errors can be eliminated. Furthermore, the LQR weighting matrices are tuned to optimize the trade-off between control input usage and transient response characteristics.
In the simulation study, a nonlinear Stribeck friction model is incorporated to reflect the stick–slip behavior observed in the actual system. For performance comparison and validation, a PID controller is additionally designed. Simulation results demonstrate that the LQR-based controller achieves more stable tracking performance than the PID controller and exhibits relatively robust behavior despite the presence of nonlinear effects.
In the experimental study, torque control performance is evaluated using a fabricated dynamometer system based on a dual servo driver configuration. It is observed that the torque sensor signals are degraded by spike noise originating from PWM actuation and wiring, as well as low frequency offset noise. To mitigate these effects, signal conditioning techniques such as circuit structure improvements and control of ADC sampling timing are applied, resulting in effective noise reduction. Experimental results confirm that the proposed LQR-based controller provides more stable torque tracking than the PID controller in a real hardware environment and achieves reliable torque control even in the presence of nonlinear friction and sensor noise.
This study is significant in that it experimentally validates a model-based controller design approach using LQR together with sensor signal improvement techniques for precise torque control of actuators incorporating reduction gears, such as dynamometers. The results provide a useful foundation for torque control design in future robotic actuators and servo systems
