Amid intensifying competition in the mobile app market, App Store
Optimization (ASO) has emerged as a core marketing strategy for securing
search-based visibility. In particular, keyword composition within store metadata
plays a decisive role in driving organic search traffic. However, existing
commercial ASO platforms often pose barriers for individual developers and
marketers at small and medium-sized studios due to their high costs and limited
accessibility. In response, this study proposes a lightweight keyword evaluation
algorithm that can be freely used by anyone and aims to empirically verify its
effectiveness through application to real-world app cases.
This study first analyzes the common metric structures of major ASO platforms —AppTweak, Sensor Tower, and MobileAction—and then designs an integrated
evaluation model that combines search volume, competition level, relevance, and
competitor app power. The proposed algorithm is designed to enable keyword
collection and selection using only freely accessible data sources, such as Google
Keyword Planner, store search results, and publicly available competitor
information. The algorithm was applied to the Google Play Store description of
an actual mobile game app, and its effectiveness was examined by comparing
search-based traffic flows before and after the metadata modification.
The experimental results indicate that incorporating the algorithm-derived
keywords into the app description led to an increase in store visitors, 128
demonstrating positive effects in terms of search exposure and organic traffic
acquisition. In contrast, the download conversion rate did not show immediate
improvement. This finding reflects a structural characteristic of ASO in which
text-based elements primarily influence the search and discovery stage, while
installation decisions are more strongly affected by visual and behavioral factors
such as icons, screenshots, and videos. These results empirically confirm the
effectiveness of keyword optimization in enhancing search visibility, while also
suggesting that improvements at the conversion stage require an integrated
approach that incorporates additional ASO elements.
This study is significant in that it presents a practical keyword analysis
procedure and evaluation algorithm that can be utilized by individual developers,
small teams, and non-experts without reliance on paid ASO platforms. By
establishing a reproducible analytical model suitable for resource-constrained
environments, the study expands the fundamental accessibility of ASO strategies
and provides a practical foundation for data-driven decision-making. Future
research may further enhance the generalizability and explanatory power of the
proposed algorithm through extensions such as multi-country experiments, A/B
testing, and multimodal ASO models that integrate visual elements.
