Background: In the digital era, where the boundaries between work and family are
increasingly blurred, the impact of parental work-to-family negative spillover on child
development has become a critical issue. This study aims to explore the specific
mechanism through which parental work-to-family negative spillover affects the learning
self-efficacy of junior high school students, examining the mediating role of family
communication climate and deeply analyzing the differential roles of fathers and mothers
within this mechanism.
Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted with 461 junior high school student
families (including 461 students and their 922 parents) in a city in China using a
matched-pair design. Instruments included the Work-Family Negative Spillover Scale, the
Family Communication Climate Scale, and the Learning Self-Efficacy Scale. The SPSS
PROCESS macro was used for mediation effect analysis.
Results: The findings indicate that: (1) Fathers' level of work-to-family negative spillover
was significantly higher than that of mothers. (2) Negative spillover from both parents
significantly negatively predicted family communication climate, which in turn significantly
positively predicted students' learning self-efficacy. (3) Family communication climate
played a significant mediating role in the relationship between parental work-to-family
negative spillover and students' learning self-efficacy. (4) A significant difference was found
in parental roles: the effect of fathers' work-to-family negative spillover on learning
self-efficacy was fully mediated by family communication climate (a full mediation model);
whereas mothers' effect operated through both the indirect path of family communication
climate and a significant direct negative path (a partial mediation model).
Conclusion: This study reveals a "resource chain transmission" path through which
parental work stress in the digital age affects children's academic development. The
findings specify the differentiated transmission models of fathers as "environment creators"
and mothers as "dual-role bearers." This research provides new empirical evidence for
understanding the core role of the family in mediating external stress and individual
development, offering important theoretical and empirical support for families, schools, and
social organizations to carry out precise interventions and build a "family-friendly" digital
social ecology.
