The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of social support on the relationship between perceived family strengths and self-concept clarity among college students. The research questions were as follows.
First, are there significant correlations among perceived family strengths, social support, and self-concept clarity among college students?
Second, does perceived family strengths significantly predict the level of social support perceived by college students?
Third, does social support have a significant effect on college students’ self-concept clarity?
Fourth, does social support exert a significant mediating effect on the relationship between perceived family strengths and self-concept clarity?
To address these research questions, an online self-report survey was conducted with college students enrolled in universities nationwide from October 27 to November 10, 2025. Among the 309 responses collected, data with insufficient or careless responses were excluded, and the remaining data were used for the final analysis. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and SPSS PROCESS Macro Model 4. Reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation analysis, mediation analysis, and bootstrapping procedures were conducted.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, correlation analyses revealed significant positive relationships among perceived family strengths, social support, and self-concept clarity. Specifically, higher levels of perceived family strengths were associated with higher levels of perceived social support and greater self-concept clarity.
Second, perceived family strengths had a significant positive effect on social support.
Third, social support was found to have a significant positive effect on self-concept clarity.
Fourth, social support partially mediated the relationship between perceived family strengths and self-concept clarity, and the indirect effect verified through bootstrapping was statistically significant.
These findings empirically demonstrate that perceived family strengths influence college students’ self-concept clarity not only directly but also indirectly through social support. The results suggest that the development of self-concept clarity among college students should be understood within the broader context of family environment and social relationships rather than being attributed solely to individual internal characteristics. In particular, this study highlights that the emotional functioning of the family and supportive interactions continue to play an important developmental role during emerging adulthood. Furthermore, the findings provide practical implications for counseling and educational settings by emphasizing the necessity of interventions that consider family strengths and social support systems alongside individual-centered approaches when supporting college students experiencing confusion in self-concept.
