This study aimed to examine the sequential double mediating effects of evaluative concerns perfectionism and emotion regulation difficulties in the relationship between parental psychological control perceived by college students and social anxiety. The research questions were as follows.
First, are there significant correlations among parental psychological control, social anxiety, evaluative concerns perfectionism, and emotion regulation difficulties?
Second, does evaluative concerns perfectionism mediate the relationship between parental psychological control and social anxiety?
Third, does emotion regulation difficulties mediate the relationship between parental psychological control and social anxiety?
Fourth, do evaluative concerns perfectionism and emotion regulation difficulties sequentially mediate the relationship between parental psychological control and social anxiety?
To address these questions, an online self-report survey was conducted with college students nationwide from October 20 to October 27, 2025. Of the 300 responses collected, a total of 287 questionnaires (108 males and 179 females) were used for the final analysis after excluding insincere responses and outliers. Data analyses were performed using SPSS 29.0 and the SPSS Process Macro Model 4.2, including reliability analysis, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation analysis, mediation analysis, and bootstrapping.
The results of this study were as follows.
First, the correlation analysis revealed significant positive correlations among parental psychological control, evaluative concerns perfectionism, emotion regulation difficulties, and social anxiety.
Second, evaluative concerns perfectionism was found to significantly mediate the relationship between parental psychological control and social anxiety.
Third, emotion regulation difficulties also significantly mediated the relationship between parental psychological control and social anxiety.
Fourth, the sequential double mediating effects of evaluative concerns perfectionism and emotion regulation difficulties were confirmed in the relationship between parental psychological control and social anxiety.
Overall, the findings indicate that higher levels of parental psychological control are associated with increased evaluative concerns perfectionism and greater emotion regulation difficulties, which in turn lead to higher levels of social anxiety. These results provide important foundational data for understanding the social evaluative contexts and emotional difficulties experienced by college students. In particular, this study highlights the need for counseling interventions that focus on parental psychological control and emotion regulation processes among college students who are highly sensitive to evaluation.
