The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a group songwriting intervention on acculturative stress and depressive feelings among Chinese international students in South Korea. Twelve Chinese international students enrolled at various universities in South Korea participated and were assigned to an experimental group (n=6) or a control group (n=6). The group songwriting intervention was conducted once weekly for eight sessions; each session lasted 60–70 minutes, and all sessions were held in the music therapy room of the Integrative Therapy Research Center at M University. To evaluate intervention effects, acculturative stress and depressive feelings were measured before and after the intervention. The collected data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to examine between-group differences and within-group pretest–posttest changes, respectively. The results were as follows. First, a significant between-group difference was found in posttest acculturative stress scores (p<.05). In addition, the experimental group showed significant decreases in total acculturative stress and subscale scores from pretest to posttest (p<.05), whereas no significant changes were observed in the control group (p> .05). Second, a significant between-group difference was also found in posttest depressive symptom scores (p<.05). The experimental group demonstrated a significant reduction in total depressive symptom scores following the intervention (p<.05), while no significant change was observed in the control group (p>.05). Overall, the group songwriting intervention was found to be effective in reducing acculturative stress and depressive feelings among Chinese international students in South Korea. These findings suggest that songwriting interventions—by structuring individuals’ experiences and emotions through lyrics and music while facilitating group interaction and emotional support—may represent a valuable music therapy approach for promoting psychological adaptation among Chinese international students in South Korea.
