This study aims to deeply explore the essence and meaning of the flow experience encountered by elite finswimmers from an interpretive phenomenological perspective. we analyzed the actual experiences and language of elite finswimmers to gain an in-depth understanding of the components of the flow experience and its meaning for the individual athletes. The participants were ten elite finswimming athletes who were registered with the Korea Underwater Association, had experience competing in national-level competitions, and had more than ten years of athletic experience. Data collection and analysis were conducted using a nine-step Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) procedure, developed based on the six analytical stages proposed by Smith, Flowers, and Larkin (2009). Data were collected through one-on-one in-depth interviews conducted over a period of approximately two months, from September 1 to November 28, 2025. The results derived from this process are as follows.
First, to extract meaning units regarding elite fin swimming athletes' immersion experiences, we examined the frequency of core concept occurrences using NVivo 14 software. The results showed the following frequencies: ‘Immersion/Concentration’ 138 occurrences, 'competition/training' 88 times, ‘body/condition’ 57 times, ‘food/alcohol’ 31 times, ‘coach’ 29 times, ‘environment/routine’ 27 times, ‘anxiety/tension’ 25 times, and ‘speed’ 23 times. Analysis results showed ‘Immersion/Concentration’ had the highest frequency among core concepts, followed by ‘Competition/Training’, ‘Body/Condition’, ‘Food/Alcohol’, ‘Coach’, ‘Environment/Routine’, ‘Anxiety/Tension’, and ‘Speed/Pace’. Analysis of in-depth interview data from 10 elite domestic finswimmers identified a total of 520 meaning units. These were structured into 4 superordinate categories and 20 subordinate categories. The superordinate categories comprised ‘Intrinsic Motivation’, ‘External Atmosphere’, ‘Value of Finswimming’, and ‘Factors Requiring Improvement’.
Second, among the immersion experiences of elite finswimmers, ‘intrinsic motivation’ encompassed immersion based on bodily sensations, regulation of anxiety and confidence, maintaining psychological stability routines, reproducing past success experiences, and the motivational reinforcement process of transforming failure into an opportunity for renewed challenge. 'External atmosphere' was formed through the interaction of environmental and lifestyle factors such as team atmosphere and coach feedback, training atmosphere, social isolation (solitude), elite culture (livelihood maintenance), daily rhythms (diet, sleep), and the regulation of anxiety and tension. The ‘experiential value of finswimming’ was structured as an experience of regaining life balance and psychological stability through achievement and record improvement, battling oneself, the immersive pleasure derived from speed, alignment of technical feel, and performance. 'Immersion barriers' were significantly influenced by fluctuations in physical condition, tension, anxiety, excessive ambition and pressure, stress, injury experiences, and perceptions of an unstable future, including post-retirement. Notably, athletes found immersion more consistently achievable in repetitive, predictable training environments than in the tension of competition. In summary, the immersion experiences of elite fin swimming athletes reveal that the essence of immersion transcends a simple performance state, constituting an ‘existential performance experience’ through an integrated structure of body, affect, and context. This finding empirically complements and deepens existing immersion theory by reflecting the unique context of the fin swimming discipline.
Third, the structure of fin swimming athletes' immersion based on Csikszentmihalyi's (1990) Flow theory comprised nine factors across three stages: preparatory stage, immersion stage, and immersion outcome. The components identified in this study—‘balance of challenge and skill’, ‘immediate feedback’, ‘sense of control’, ‘time distortion’, ‘clear goals’, 'flow state', ‘focus on the task at hand’, ‘integration of action and awareness’, and ‘intra-purpose experience’. Among these, ‘sense of speed’ and ‘internal focus’ in finswimming functioned as key elements extending flow into a sensory and embodied experience.
Synthesizing the above findings, this study reveals that the flow experience of elite fin swimming athletes, who have engaged in this non-popular sport for extended periods, constitutes a holistic experience where body, mind, and surrounding environment are organically integrated. This represents a significant deepening and complement to existing flow theories, addressing the unique context and specificity inherent to the sport of fin swimming that previous theories had insufficiently explained. Particularly for elite finswimmers, the immersion experience functioned as a crucial driving force that went beyond mere concentration on athletic performance. It fostered happiness and pride as athletes, enhanced a sense of self-growth, and restored psychological stability. Furthermore, the significance lies in how the athletes' flow experiences illuminated the sport's unique contextual factors, thereby expanding existing flow theory. Ultimately, this provides academic and practical grounds that can contribute to promoting athletic persistence and enhancing performance capabilities.
Third, the flow state of elite fin swimming athletes is presented in nine aspects: Csikszentmihalyi's (1990) ‘balance of challenge and skill’, ‘immediate feedback’, ‘sense of control’, ‘time distortion’, ‘clear goals’, ‘flow state’, ‘focus on the task at hand’, 'integration of action awareness', and ‘intra-purpose experience’. Notably, ‘sense of speed’ and ‘internal focus’ expanded immersion into a sensory and embodied experience. Through an integrated structure of Body, Affect, and Context, it clarified that the essence of immersion lies in ‘existential performance experience’. This represents an empirical refinement and deepening of immersion theory through the unique context of fin swimming.
In summary, this study revealed that the flow experience of elite finswimmers who have long competed in this non-popular sport is a state where body, mind, and surroundings merge into one. This finding profoundly supplements the unique characteristics of finswimming that existing flow theories could not explain. For these athletes, the flow experience served as a crucial driving force that went beyond mere concentration on the sport; it fostered pride in their identity as athletes and provided a source of mental stability. Therefore, the analysis of the flow experience in elite fin swimmers presented in this study offers important academic and practical grounds for enhancing performance. It does so by increasing self-efficacy and fostering a tangible sense of growth.
