The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effect of social networks on the relationship between career barriers and job preparation behaviors among career-interrupted women. Specifically, this study aims to identify how social networks function as a critical psychosocial resource in the reemployment process and to empirically analyze their influence on overcoming career barriers. Based on this purpose, the following research questions were established: (1) What are the relationships among career barriers, social networks, and job
preparation behaviors of career-interrupted women? (2) What is the direct effect of career barriers on job preparation behaviors? (3) Does social networking mediate the relationship between career barriers and job preparation behaviors? The independent variable, career barriers, consisted of lack of confidence, burden of housework and childcare, physical fatigue, economic burden, insufficient career preparation, and social relationship burden. The dependent variable, job preparation behavior, included job information searching behavior, preparatory job-seeking behavior, formal job-seeking behavior, informal job-seeking behavior, job-seeking activeness, and job acceptance attitude. The mediating variable, social networks, was composed of personal network intimacy, job-related SNS activities, informal social networks, and formal social networks. Data were collected through an online survey administered to 500 women aged between 30 and 59 who had experienced career interruption. After excluding invalid responses, 450 questionnaires were used for the final analysis. The results are as follows. First, descriptive statistics showed that all variables met the criteria for normal distribution. Among the sub-factors of career barriers, lack of confidence was the most prominent. Among social network factors, personal network intimacy showed the highest mean, and among job preparation behaviors, job information searching behavior was the highest. Second, career barriers were found to have a negative correlation with social networks, and a weak negative correlation with job preparation behaviors. In contrast, social networks showed a strong positive correlation with job preparation behaviors. Third, social networks were found to have a full mediating effect on the relationship between career barriers and job preparation behaviors. Career barriers had a negative effect on social networks, while social networks had a strong positive effect on job preparation behaviors. When the mediating variable was included, the direct effect of career barriers on job preparation behaviors became non-significant, confirming a full mediation effect. The Sobel test further supported the statistical significance of this mediating effect. Based on these findings, social networks play a significant role in enhancing job preparation behaviors among career-interrupted women and serve as a crucial mediating factor between career barriers and employment readiness. In particular, the finding that lack of confidence is the most prominent career barrier and a key factor weakening social networks highlights the importance of image coaching education. These results provide foundational data for developing employment support policies, social network reinforcement programs, and image coaching education programs aimed at improving self-confidence and interpersonal competence for career interrupted women.
