This paper is a study on the short rafter ties fixing the rafters of traditional wooden architecture. Short rafter ties are a technique of traditional wooden architecture with little original shape left due to frequent rafters, and you can find its original shape or traditional appearance in buildings that have been dismantled and repaired for nearly 100 years. The appearance can be confirmed by the photos and records contained in the repair report, but it is regrettable that the research and records were neglected because they were not major structural members.
The change of the rafters can be confirmed by the original long rafter, which was used as a wood on lattice weave when the traditional wooden architecture was dismantled, and originanl long and short rafter, which has only the short rafter tie hole left, and long rafter member, which has the short rafter tie hole left in its position.
Among the buildings in which the short rafter tie hole is identified, it can be seen that the method of hanging the rafters has changed because it is not connected to the long rafter and is installed by hanging it on the long rafter. This is because the rafters in which the short rafter tie was used were originally installed as an crossed-hanger. The confirmation of the short rafter tie hole shows that the rafter hanging method of traditional wooden architecture has changed from the off-hanging method to the over-hanging method.
A short rafter tie is a device that prevents the upward and downward movement of the rafters. It was a device that fixed the inclined member before the coalition was used, and it was connected by drilling a hole in the rafters. After drilling a hole using a chisel in the center of the rafters as a hexagon or octagon, a thin member such as a pine tree or miscellaneous tree is threaded through the hole. A triangular short rafter tie hole can be made very easily with holes made with saws and chisels.
The short rafter tie hanger is installed to fix the lead in a place where the lead is not installed due to the misalignment of the lead. Cases of installation to fix the side rafters in the Gyeongsangbuk-do region is confirmed, and it is confirmed that it is installed in the long rafter of front and rear in folk residents in the northeastern Gangwon-do. Since the upper part of the long rafter is first fixed with a short rafter tie hanger and then installed by far, it is a rafter hanging method. It is possible to simplify construction, improve the rafter structure, and reduce the roof load.
Unlike government constructions architecture, financially weak folk residents architecture would have been difficult to use metal nails and would be less complete. The installation of triangular short rafter tie holes and short rafter tie hanger would have been easy to install, and the installation of short rafter ties and rafters would have been easy to distribute to private house architecture.
The technique of short rafter tie found in folk residents in northeastern Gangwon Province is made in a unique shape compared to the nation's short rafter tie holes, and the method of using a short rafter tie hanger was a good way to compensate for the shortcomings of construction, structure, and load.
In the late Joseon Dynasty, rafter hanging in some parts of northeastern Gangwon Province has not been carried out until now due to changes in the times, such as the supply of hardware and the development of tools, but it is hoped that a unique method of rafter installation with regional characteristics will contribute to the diversity of research on traditional wooden architecture.
