(New Zealand Ministry of education, 2010)에서 제공하는 Problem Solving Level 1을 이경진(2016)이 번안한 도구를 사용하였다.

The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of a STEAM-based unplugged coding play program on young children's computational thinking, mathematical problem-solving ability, creativity, and playfulness. The subjects of this study consisted of a total of 75 children: 25 children aged 4-5 years from E daycare center located in S city, Gyeonggi-do, as the experimental group (unplugged coding play + coding special activities), 25 children aged 4-5 years from S daycare center in the same city as the comparison group (coding special activities), and 25 children aged 4-5 years from H daycare center in the same city as the control group (no coding education experience). The social background, economic level, community culture and educational experiences of the parents in the three groups, as well as the teaching experience of the teachers, were similar. To assess children's computational thinking, an assessment tool developed by Lee Kyung-hee (2020) was used, which was reconstructed as a picture-oriented test based on the 'Bebras Challenge – Castors: Years 4 & 5' questions developed by Bebras (2018). To measure young children's mathematical problem-solving ability, a tool translated by Lee Kyung-jin (2016) from Problem Solving Level 1 provided by the New Zealand Ministry of Education (2010) was used. For young children's creativity scale, the 'Teacher's Creativity Rating Scale for Young Children (TCRSYC)' developed by Noh Young-hee, Kim Kyung-chul, and Kim Ho (2006) was used. To measure young children's playfulness, a scale developed by Barnett (1991), translated by Yoo Ae-yeol (1994), and revised and supplemented by Bae Mi-kyung and Kim Yong-mi (2016) was used. Data analysis was conducted with the SPSS Window 25.0 program. One-way ANOVA was performed to verify homogeneity among the experimental group, comparison group, and control group in terms of young children's computational thinking, mathematical problem-solving ability, creativity, and playfulness according to the program treatment. To verify the program's effectiveness and to examine whether there were substantial changes within the experimental group, comparison group, and control group before and after the program implementation, paired sample T-tests were carried out. After the post-test, one-way ANOVA was performed to analyze differences among the three groups. As the differences between groups were significant, Scheffé post-hoc tests were conducted.
STEAM-based unplugged coding play was selected with the goal of enhancing computational thinking, mathematical problem-solving ability, creativity, and playfulness through a process in which young children independently play with the use of unplugged coding materials and naturally solve problems that arise on their own. This study applied the STEAM education model designed for young children by Jang Sook-hyeon and Kim Ji-hyeon (2025a), which integrates the three stages of STEAM—contextual presentation, creative design, and emotional experience—with the TMSI model that emphasizes the tinkering process among maker education models. By applying this model, this study constructed three stages: the problem discovery stage where children set problems on their own through exploration of unplugged coding materials, the creative design stage where children freely create based on information acquired through continuous tinkering, and the emotional experience stage where results are shared and improved within the community. This approach aims to promote computational thinking, mathematical problem-solving ability, creativity, and playfulness by enabling young children to naturally discover problems in emergent play through unplugged coding materials; experience trial and error, make self-correction and supplementation, and deepen their learning in the process of proposing and applying ideas to solve these problems.
After applying STEAM-based unplugged coding play, quantitative evaluation results showed positive effects on the experimental group's computational thinking, mathematical problem-solving ability, creativity, and playfulness. By exploring unplugged coding materials and repeatedly analyzing and modifying problems, young children improved their computational thinking, which encompasses procedural thinking and logical reasoning abilities. The process of constructing and adjusting coding pathways enabled young children to apply concepts of quantity, distance, and space in actual play contexts and thereby to achieve development in mathematical problem-solving ability. Additionally, voluntary design and idea sharing enhanced creative thinking, while peer collaboration and immersion strengthened playfulness. Qualitative analysis results revealed that young children independently explored, analyzed and solved problem situations, and proactively participated in play within unplugged coding activities. In this process, they demonstrated creative ideas, collaborated with peers, and accumulated problem-solving experiences appropriate to their developmental level. The joy of play led to positive emotions, which were found to expand into new meanings and integrated learning.
This study is meaningful in that it reflected in STEAM-based unplugged coding play the process by which young children independently expand their interests and curiosity discovered in daily life and play. It also presented practical directions for teaching and learning that can integrate STEAM and unplugged coding within the context of a play-based curriculum. By verifying the design of an integrated education program appropriate for age and developmental level and its field applicability, this study will be able to be utilized as foundational data for follow-up research to implement coding education within play and realize STEAM integration in early childhood education and childcare settings.
