Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience limitations in social communication accompanied by difficulties in emotional regulation, which influence their participation and response patterns within everyday interactional contexts. Accordingly, there has been increasing emphasis on intervention approaches that integratively address social communication and emotional regulation. The present study aimed to explore how social communication and emotional regulation responses of children with ASD at the Language Partner level are observed throughout the intervention process when a SCERTS model–based intervention is applied.
The participants were four children with ASD aged 6–7 years who were identified as functioning at the Language Partner level based on the SCERTS diagnostic–observational assessment. The intervention was conducted once a week for 120 minutes per session over a total of 12 sessions. Each session consisted of free play, walking activities, snack time, Language Time, and Emotion Time. Data were collected using pre- and post-intervention SCERTS diagnostic–observational assessments, along with a Strategy–Response Checklist that documented children’s responses following the provision of transactional support strategies during intervention sessions.
The results indicated that all participants demonstrated overall positive patterns of change in both social communication and emotional regulation domains in the pre- and post-intervention SCERTS assessments. In the social communication domain, increases were observed in episodes of responding to partner initiatives and engaging in interactions, particularly within joint attention contexts, while symbol use varied according to individual characteristics and activity contexts. Social communication responses were more frequently observed as spontaneous responses during preferred activities and everyday demand situations, whereas prompted responses and non-responses were more commonly observed during transitions and structured task situations. In the emotional regulation domain, co-regulation needs were particularly salient during transitions and changes in sensory input; however, across sessions, repeated patterns were observed in which children’s responses progressed toward self-regulation following the provision of transactional support strategies, including sensory regulation support, predictable visual and organizational support, environmental modification, verbal cueing, and movement-based regulation.
These findings illustrate how transactional support strategies are implemented within a SCERTS model–based intervention and how children’s social communication and emotional regulation response patterns are observed across intervention sessions. By providing a detailed description of strategy implementation and children’s response patterns for children with ASD at the Language Partner level, this study offers practical foundational data for understanding social communication and emotional regulation interventions.
