This study proposes a novel set of contribution metrics for decomposing collaborative defensive performance between pitchers and infielders in Major League Baseball (MLB) double play situations, and examines their statistical and construct validity. Using Statcast play-by-play data from the 2016–2024 seasons, a logistic regression model was developed to estimate the expected probability of turning a double play (xGDP) given the batted ball and game context, while the realized run value of each event was measured using changes in run expectancy (ΔRE24). The difference between expected and realized value was defined as a residual, and an exponential decay weighting function based on the absolute residual was applied to allocate double play value between the pitcher and the fielders, yielding two new indices: pitcher_contribution and fielder_contribution.
Model performance assessment showed that the post-shift xGDP model achieved an AUC of 0.724, which corresponds to 'acceptable discrimination' under the criteria of Hosmer and Lemeshow (2000). ΔRE24 analysis confirmed that double plays produced the largest run-prevention effect within the sample of situations with a runner on first and fewer than two outs (average value of +1.13 runs), highlighting the strategic importance of the event. A sensitivity analysis on the difficulty-weighting parameter λ was conducted over the range 0.1–3.0, tracking changes in means, variances, monotonicity (Spearman correlation with xGDP), and a Balance Index summarizing the relative distribution of contribution between pitchers and fielders. The results indicated that around λ = 1.0, the variances of pitcher and fielder contributions converge, the monotonic relationship between pitcher contribution and xGDP is maintained, and the Balance Index reaches its minimum, suggesting a reasonable equilibrium between distributional stability and pitcher–fielder balance.
The validity of the proposed metrics was further examined at both event and player-season levels. Pitcher_contribution exhibited a weak but positive association with xGDP and xGDP_pitcher_mean, indicating that pitchers who more frequently create double-play–favorable environments are allocated greater credit. In contrast, fielder_contribution was essentially uncorrelated and statistically non-significant with respect to xGDP and xGDP_fielder_mean, while displaying small but consistent positive correlations with established fielding metrics such as Outs Above Average (OAA), Defensive Runs Saved (DRS), Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR), and Double Play Runs (DPR). This pattern suggests that the fielder metric captures 'performance relative to expected difficulty' rather than the sheer frequency or ease of opportunities. League-level analysis from 2016 to 2024 showed that the annual Balance Index remained tightly concentrated between 0.833 and 0.862, revealing a structurally pitcher-dominant allocation of run-prevention value in infield double play contexts.
Overall, by combining an xGDP prediction model, ΔRE24-based realized value, and a residual-driven weighting scheme, this study presents a coherent analytical framework for disentangling 'predictable, opportunity-driven pitcher contribution' from 'unexpected, above-expectation fielder performance' in double plays. The proposed indices are best interpreted as complementary rather than standalone summary metrics, and have potential applications in evaluating pitcher–infielder coordination, identifying double-play–oriented pitcher types, optimizing infield configurations, and quantifying the effects of rule changes on collaborative defensive structures.
