The nineteenth century in Europe was marked by the piano's emergence as the
central instrument of both domestic and social life. Following the Industrial
Revolution, the growth of the middle class and the development of printing and
publishing technologies fundamentally transformed modes of musical consumption.
For the general public, who had limited access to large concert venues, the piano
served as a primary medium for musical experience. Among its forms, the "one
piano, four hands" (piano duet) genre was the most widespread means of musical
enjoyment in homes and salons. More than a pastime, it was regarded as a symbol
of sociability and cultural refinement, serving as a space where performers could
express both musical intimacy and social decorum through cooperation and
    interaction.
Within this cultural environment, many composers personally transcribed their
orchestral or chamber works for one piano, four hands (autograph transcriptions).
This process allowed them not only to translate the musical essence of the original
into a new medium but also to proactively respond to emerging audiences and
distribution channels. However, prior scholarship has typically confined its scope to
formal and technical analysis or treated these autograph transcriptions merely as
products of educational or social functions. This study, therefore, examines the
surrogate function performed by these autograph arrangements within
nineteenth-century European musical culture, considering the piano duet not as a
simple reduction of the original but as “another mode of musical existence.”
The study's corpus comprises six autograph one-piano, four-hand arrangements
by major nineteenth-century European composers: Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt,
Johannes Brahms, César Franck, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and Edvard Grieg.
Rather than an exhaustive analysis of all six works, this dissertation focuses on
principal structural sections (e.g., introduction, primary/secondary themes, transition,
and coda) to investigate how the musical elements of the orchestral originals were
realized and transformed within the piano duet medium. Through these comparisons,
the study reveals the composers’ aesthetic decisions and interpretive interventions
    within the process of transcription.
The research employs three primary methods: (1) a review of documentary
sources, including publishing records, correspondence, and first editions; (2) a
    comparative score analysis of key sections in the original and arranged versions;
and (3) a socio-historical examination of nineteenth-century music consumption and
publishing environments. These approaches demonstrate that autograph transcriptions
were not merely substitutes for orchestral performance but interpretive acts through
which composers rearticulated their aesthetic consciousness within the medium of
    the piano.
The findings reveal that the autograph piano-duet transcriptions fulfilled three
distinct forms of surrogate function: (1) Sonic Surrogacy, where composers
creatively compensated for orchestral textures and multi-layered sonorities through
the coordinated register distribution between the two performers; (2) Social
Surrogacy, in which the duets enabled musical participation and dissemination
    within domestic and salon settings, effectively replacing public concerts for many;
and (3) Aesthetic Surrogacy, in which the composer’s own interpretation and artistic
judgment were embedded in a secondary act of creation, thus reconfiguring the
identity of the original work within a new medium.
In conclusion, the autograph one-piano, four-hand transcription functioned in
nineteenth-century musical culture as both a medium for the social dissemination of
music and a creative surrogate that reinterpreted the original work. From this
perspective, the present study reconsiders the piano duet not as an educational
derivative but as a creative and interpretive process reflecting the composer’s
aesthetics and the listening culture of the age. In doing so, it challenges the
hierarchical opposition between “original” and “substitute” within arrangement
studies and contributes to a broader understanding of nineteenth-century musical
    reception and media aesthetics.
