This thesis examines the activities of four small art groups active in the Korean art scene of the 1980s—Ta-Ra, Logos & Pathos, Nanjido, and META-VOX—focusing on how they diverged from the dominant trends of the time, namely institutional Dansaekhwa and socially engaged Minjung art. Composed largely of artists in their twenties and thirties, these groups sought more open and autonomous experimentation beyond the rigid and hierarchical structures of the existing art establishment. With an anti-modernist attitude, they critically reworked issues of pictorial flatness while expanding their practices through sculpture, object-based works, and installation art within broader tendencies toward de-materialization and de-genre experimentation, thereby suggesting new aesthetic possibilities.
This study categorizes the groups according to their differing artistic orientations: Ta-Ra and Logos & Pathos are positioned as groups that extended, while simultaneously reinterpreting, the lineage of modernism; in contrast, Nanjido and META-VOX are understood as collectives that pursued experiments aligned with post-modern practices. Tara and Logos & Pathos emphasized the activities of individual artists rather than presenting a unified ideological position. Although they developed diverse medium-based experiments that exceeded image-reductive tendencies in contemporary art, their works continued to exhibit characteristics associated with formalist modernism, such as minimalism and conceptual art. In particular, the artists of Logos & Pathos critically inherited and reconfigured abstract painting, exploring the potential for a new abstract sensibility. By contrast, Nanjido and META-VOX shared clearer collective aims, seeking not to maintain but to surpass the formal boundaries of modernist art. They actively incorporated everyday objects and discarded materials into their installations, transforming materiality itself into a means of expression and thereby reflecting individual experience and social reality.
Through an analysis of artworks exhibited by each group, this study identifies the defining characteristics and tendencies of these small collectives. By reinterpreting them along the dual axes of modernist continuity and post-modern experimentation, the research reveals the multilayered nature of small-group artistic practices in the 1980s. Ultimately, it reconsiders the significance of the avant-garde activities undertaken by these groups and situates them within the diverse and stratified landscape of Korean art during the decade.
