This study was conducted to examine the effects of the working environment of lifeguards on job satisfaction and to analyze the relationships between these factors in order to improve working conditions and enhance job satisfaction among lifeguards. A survey was administered to a total of 259 individuals who were currently working or had prior experience as lifeguards at water-related recreational facilities nationwide. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0 for Windows.
To examine differences in job satisfaction according to the demographic characteristics of lifeguards and to analyze the effects of the working environment on job satisfaction, t-tests and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were conducted. In addition, multiple regression analysis was performed to identify the influence of the working environment on job satisfaction.
The results of the study are as follows. First, significant differences in job satisfaction were found according to demographic characteristics, including gender, age, work experience, type of facility, working hours, and salary. Second, the working environment of lifeguards, including the human environment, facility environment, and welfare environment, was found to have a significant effect on job satisfaction. Despite the presence of various factors that hinder job satisfaction, such as excessive certification requirements, inadequate rest facilities, and low wages, improvements in working conditions remain insufficient. Furthermore, there is a lack of research focusing on improving the working conditions of lifeguards.
This study targeted lifeguards with work experience across various aquatic environments; however, it has limitations in clearly identifying issues specific to individual facilities. In addition, the relatively young average age and limited work experience of the participants may restrict a comprehensive understanding of the problems faced by this group. Future studies are expected to produce more meaningful results by addressing these limitations through comprehensive surveys or qualitative research methods and by comparing and analyzing such findings with the results of this study.
