This study aimed to demonstrate whether Christian death education within Korean churches can effectively reduce death anxiety among the new elderly generation and enable them to live a life of well-dying. It also sought to prove whether participation in death education enhances their intrinsic religiosity and whether this heightened intrinsic religiosity can provide an evangelistic starting point leading to actual evangelistic action. The results confirmed that Christian death education within the church can yield significant effects on the New Elderly Generation regarding these issues to a certain extent.
The New Elderly Generation refers to the baby boomers born during the approximately 20-year period from 1955 to 1974, following the Korean War. This generation currently constitutes the largest demographic segment, approximately 33.3%, not only in Korean society but also within Korean churches. They exhibit distinct characteristics and tendencies that clearly differentiate them from previous elderly generations. The most noticeable feature of the New Elderly Generation is their high educational attainment. Leveraging their high education, the new elderly generation actively engaged in gathering information via the internet and participating in diverse small group gatherings(clubs, cafes, bands, group chats, etc.) through SNS. They also exhibited a strong inclination toward volunteering to contribute to society. Furthermore, unlike previous generations that valued thrift, the new elderly generation emerged as a driving force in an active consumer culture, underpinned by their increased economic prosperity.
However, despite possessing characteristics and tendencies distinct from previous generations due to their high educational attainment, the new elderly generation faces practical difficulties stemming from deteriorating socio-economic conditions, extended life expectancy, financial insecurity regarding post-retirement living, and physical aging and illnesses that arise with advancing age. Meanwhile, the rapid influx of this new elderly generation into the senior population is causing a crisis for Korean churches, coinciding with the departure of younger members. Furthermore, this new elderly generation is exposed to severe spiritual conflict between faith and ideology. This extreme bias among the elderly generation is psychologically linked to anxiety about death. Education is one approach that can reduce this death anxiety, enhance intrinsic religiosity, and further contribute to social integration. Specifically, Christian death education can enhance the spiritual well-being of individual believers and strengthen their identity as children of God. Furthermore, Christian death education can also reinforce motivation for purpose in the remaining years of life and for evangelism among elderly believers.
This study presents the case of Anheung Church as an example of such Christian death education in practice. Anheung Church is a church affiliated with the “Korea Evangelical Holiness Church(KEHC)”. In-depth interviews with participants in Anheung Church's death program revealed that Christian death education renewed their perception of death from a Christian perspective, reduced their anxiety about death, and strengthened their assurance of salvation. Participants reported being most challenged by the lectures on the hope of resurrection. These results appear to stem from the Christian belief in resurrection reducing participants' fear of death and providing hope for eternal life, thereby fulfilling their need for spiritual well-being. Regarding life direction, participants recognized the command to evangelize and engage in missions as a God-given calling for their remaining years, and their motivation for service and evangelism was found to have significantly increased.
Therefore, considering the entire research process and results, Christian death education can be an effective alternative that changes believers' personal perception of death, reduces anxiety about death, increases intrinsic assurance of salvation and religiosity, and transforms the direction of believers' remaining lives into that of evangelists through this strengthened inner religiosity. Furthermore, it can be seen as providing motivation that contributes to the Korean church's renewed leap forward and social integration. For these reasons, Christian death education within the church needs to be further strengthened and developed going forward.
