This study aims to elucidate the unique characterization of Philip within Luke’s narrative and the specific theological functions he performs. While traditional scholarship has often marginalized Philip as a mere “transitional figure” or a “bridge” filling the gap between Peter and Paul, this research employs narrative criticism to demonstrate that Philip is one of the pivotal figures who first embodies and concretely realizes Luke’s theological program as outlined in Acts 1:8.
Luke portrays Philip as a “liminal figure” possessing a dual identity. Positioned socially between the Hebraic and Hellenistic factions and geographically on the border between Jerusalem and the Gentile world, Philip’s liminality serves as the driving force that propels the Gospel beyond Judaic boundaries toward Samaria and the ends of the earth. Particularly in Acts 8, Philip’s ministry marks a decisive turning point, shifting the salvific paradigm from a centripetal model of the Old Testament to a centrifugal mission model.
This research focuses on the hermeneutical function Philip performs in the episode of the Ethiopian eunuch. By reinterpreting the “Suffering Servant” of Isaiah 53 as Jesus Christ, Philip connects the themes of “humiliation” and “deprivation of life” within the text to the eunuch’s existential reality. This Christological reinterpretation facilitates the eunuch’s participation in Christ’s suffering and unfolds the “New Exodus” motif, extending from Jerusalem to the pagan world. Furthermore, the study argues that Philip’s mission constitutes a redemptive historical event that fulfills the eschatological prophecy of inclusion in Isaiah 56 through the proclamation of the Gospel in Isaiah 53.
Moreover, this study highlights Caesarea as Philip’s final destination. As a crossroads where the missionary trajectories of Philip, Peter, and Paul converge, Caesarea reveals that Philip’s ministry does not merely supplement but rather prefigures and anticipates the work of the two apostles. Philip opened the door to Gentile mission before Peter and established a community of hospitality and fellowship with Gentiles before Paul.
In Luke’s narrative, Philip is far from a minor supporting character. He is an early evangelist who, guided by the Holy Spirit, dismantled geographical, ethnic, and legal barriers. As an integral bridge linking Peter’s apostolic authority with Paul’s Gentile mission, Philip stands as a central figure in Luke-Acts, embodying the expansion of the Gospel from the confines of Judaism toward universal salvation.
