This study explores the interrelationship between Paul Verlaine’s poetry and Claude Debussy’s musical language in Ariettes oubliées, seeking to understand how the fusion of poetic expression and musical form contributes to the evolution of the French mélodie. Rather than merely analyzing the structure of the work, the study aims to reveal how verbal and musical elements interact to create a unified aesthetic.
The research first examines how Verlaine’s poetic characteristics—his ambiguous and suggestive language, irregular rhythms, and subtle prosody—are transformed by Debussy into musical equivalents through coloristic harmony, flexible rhythm, and free melodic lines. These interactions show that poetry and music coexist not in parallel, but in an organically integrated flow. Second, Ariettes oubliéesis situated within the broader context of the French art song, embodying the transitional aesthetics between Romanticism and modernism, while reflecting Impressionist and Symbolist tendencies. The piano accompaniment functions not merely as harmonic support but as an extension of poetic imagery, in close dialogue with the vocal line.
From a performative perspective, the study also explores how French pronunciation, accentuation, and poetic rhythm inform musical interpretation. Debussy’s songs demand a performance that transcends literal rhythm, awakening the flow and nuance of language through musical phrasing. The performer, therefore, must internalize the fusion of word and tone to express the inner world of the work.
In conclusion, Ariettes oubliées exemplifies Debussy’s pursuit of a new synthesis between language and sound, reflecting the refined aesthetics of the French art song. It is hoped that this study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the work and inspire further research on Debussy’s mélodies and French vocal literature.
