This study developed a mindset-based mathematics motivation enhancement program for elementary school students and examined its effects on mathematical affective variables. Developed using the ADDIE model, the program consisted of 10 sessions covering brain plasticity, growth and fixed mindsets, reframing mistakes, valuing effort and mathematics, mathematics learning strategies, and goal setting. The intervention targeted 5th-grade students with experimental (n=102) and control (n=102) groups; the control group received a parallel program on mathematics value, experiential activities, and learning strategies.
Repeated-measures ANOVA showed significant Group × Time interactions. The experimental group exhibited improvements in growth mindset, mathematics mastery goals, and mathematical self-efficacy, with reductions in fixed mindset and mathematics anxiety—effects persisting at two-month follow-up. Mediation analyses revealed differential pathways: growth mindset change fully mediated self-efficacy gains and partially mediated mastery goals, while fixed mindset reduction mediated anxiety decrease, suggesting approach vs. avoidance motivation pathways.
A one-year qualitative follow-up confirmed sustained effects. These findings demonstrate that mindset-based programs effectively enhance elementary students' mathematical affective variables, offering insights for addressing cognitive-affective imbalance in Korean mathematics education.
