This study analyzes fire incident reports and proposes the installation of sprinkler
systems as a measure to reduce casualties caused by residential fires. An analysis of fire
reports from Daegu over the past decade shows that approximately 37.8% of all building
fires occurred in residential buildings, and about 78.6% of fire-related fatalities took place
in such dwellings. Notably, the mortality rate in homes without sprinklers was about 75%
higher than in those equipped with them, highlighting the critical importance of sprinkler
installation.
Through a statistical comparison of fatality rates based on the presence or absence of
sprinkler systems, this study demonstrates the urgent need to install automatic fire
extinguishing systems in residential buildings. It also addresses the legislative gap that
excludes detached houses from mandatory sprinkler installation under current regulations.
Furthermore, the standards, maintenance costs, and system configurations for residential
sprinkler systems-and suggests policy improvements such as legal amendments, financial
subsidies, and insurance premium discounts. Comparative references to international
practices, including those in Japan, are also presented to support the proposed measures.
