This study examines the potential use of a microbial complex as a preventive measure against industrial accidents in septic tanks. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations, septic tanks are classified as confined spaces, where incidents such as fire, explosion, and asphyxiation continue to be reported. In response, the Ministry of Employment and Labor issued a risk alert in 2022 for work involving these and similar facilities, emphasizing stricter adherence to safety procedures. However, despite these measures, accidents in septic tanks persist, indicating the need for approaches that extend beyond existing protocols.
To explore such an alternative, this study evaluated the applicability of the microbial complex for accident prevention. A septic tank at a public institution in Pohang was selected as the study site, and both laboratory analyses using samples from the anaerobic chamber and an on-site field demonstration following the application of the microbial agent were conducted.
The laboratory findings showed that hydrogen sulfide a primary hazardous gas associated with septic-tank accidents decreased to below the detection limit within 48 hours when the agent was applied at a 1.0% concentration. Ammonia levels also decreased by at least 93% in treatment groups with concentrations of 1.0% or higher.
Field measurements supported these observations. The hydrogen sulfide concentration, which had reached a maximum of 9.2 ppm prior to treatment, dropped to 2.2 ppm after two days. Ammonia levels and composite odor intensity also showed substantial reductions.
Overall, the results indicate that the microbial complex has the capacity to significantly mitigate flammable gases and odor compounds in septic tanks, suggesting its potential as an accident-prevention measure. Continued investigation is needed to assess its practical applicability across a wider range of operational environments.
