The purpose of this study is to overcome the limitations of existing Korean
vocabulary education, which is biased toward a synchronic perspective, and to propose
a systematic educational framework using 'etymology' as a practical alternative to
realize the intrinsic value of vocabulary.
Current vocabulary education in the Korean language curriculum tends to focus on
the quantitative expansion of vocabulary and the acquisition of dictionary
definitions. Consequently, it has the limitation of overlooking the historical nature
and cultural context of vocabulary. Therefore, this study elucidated the educational
utility of utilizing etymology by introducing a 'diachronic perspective' to
vocabulary education. In particular, this study redefined etymology not merely as
linguistic knowledge clarifying the origin of words, but as holistic information
encompassing socio-cultural backgrounds and narratives, thereby expanding its
educational applicability.
Based on this theoretical foundation, this study designed a 'content system for
vocabulary education using etymology' as follows: First, in the category of
‘deepening lexical knowledge,’ the study enables learners to understand vocabulary
logically by exploring structural analysis and the thought processes reflected in
word formation. Second, in the category of 'enhancing vocabulary proficiency,' the
study aims to equip learners with foundational accuracy and practical applicability
by exploring the principles of language norms and approaching easily confused words
etymologically. Third, in the category of 'fostering lexical consciousness,' the
study encourages learners to cultivate an independent and ethical attitude toward
language by understanding the dynamics of the vocabulary system and reflecting on the
cultural values embedded in words. Furthermore, Chapter 3 presents concrete
teaching-learning materials and activities applicable in actual educational settings to implement these contents.
This study is significant in demonstrating that the use of etymology goes beyond
inducing simple interest and contributes to helping learners deeply understand the
world through vocabulary and grow into mature language subjects. It is expected that
the proposals of this study will expand the horizon of Korean vocabulary education
and serve as a practical catalyst for activating etymology education in the field.
