The purpose of this study was to explore the potential and limitations of using ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence–based language model, as a psychological support tool for elementary school football players. Psychological factors such as confidence, concentration, anxiety, tension, and emotional regulation play an important role in sports performance, particularly during childhood, a critical period for psychological development. However, psychological support for youth athletes is often limited due to constraints related to time, cost, and accessibility. In this context, recent advances in artificial intelligence have raised interest in the possible application of conversational AI tools for psychological support in sports settings.
This study employed an exploratory qualitative research design based on literature review and case analysis rather than experimental hypothesis testing. A total of twelve male elementary school football players aged nine to ten participated in ChatGPT-based psychological support sessions. The data were collected through records of interactions between the players and ChatGPT, post-intervention questionnaires, and observational notes from coaches. The collected data were analyzed by categorizing psychological issues and identifying recurring themes related to the players’ experiences.
The results indicated that the participants commonly experienced psychological difficulties such as lack of confidence, decreased concentration, anxiety, excessive tension, and emotional arousal during training and competition. Through interactions with ChatGPT, players were encouraged to express their emotions and practice basic psychological skills, including positive self-talk, imagery, and breathing techniques. Most participants reported that these interactions were helpful in increasing psychological awareness and promoting emotional regulation during sports activities. However, the perceived changes varied among individuals, suggesting that the effects of AI-based psychological support may differ depending on personal characteristics and contextual factors.
It is important to note that this study does not aim to evaluate the therapeutic effectiveness of ChatGPT or to position it as a substitute for professional psychological counseling. Rather, ChatGPT was utilized as a supplementary digital tool to support psychological skill practice and self-reflection. The findings suggest that ChatGPT may serve as an accessible and immediate support resource that complements the role of coaches and sports psychology professionals, particularly in environments where formal psychological services are limited.
Despite its exploratory nature and methodological limitations, this study contributes to the existing literature by providing preliminary evidence on how AI-based psychological support can be applied in youth sports contexts. The results offer foundational insights for future research on the ethical, practical, and methodological considerations of integrating artificial intelligence into psychological support systems for young athletes.
