EFL(English as a Foreign Language)

The purpose of this study is to explore the teaching experiences of an elementary school English teacher through autoethnography and to analyze the practices and structural limitations of elementary English education from a teacher’s perspective. As both teacher and research participant, the researcher collected data centered on her teaching experiences, classroom practices, interactions with students, and informal exchanges with fellow teachers, which were reconstructed into a reflective narrative. This study seeks to demonstrate that teachers’ English teaching practices are not merely the result of individual choices, but are shaped and adjusted within institutional structures and cultural contexts, including the national curriculum, textbooks, instructional hours, and teacher training systems. The theoretical framework draws on Bourdieu’s concepts of field and habitus, as well as a perspective that adaptively applies Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) within an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context.
The findings reveal that elementary English specialist teachers function as practical agents who negotiate between the ideals of CLT and the realities of the EFL environment, designing instruction that aligns with students’ proficiency levels and learning contexts. Despite limited opportunities for authentic language exposure, the teacher actively sought to expand students’ experiences of actual language use. Reflective practice and informal professional dialogue were found to play a crucial role in the development of teaching expertise and the reconstruction of teacher identity. Furthermore, the current policies and textbook structures of elementary English education were shown to inadequately support language learning through repetition and cumulative exposure, thereby increasing teachers’ practical burdens and potentially exacerbating learning disparities among students.
Based on these analyses, this study suggests that improving elementary English education requires not the introduction of new teaching methods, but a systemic shift in which public education assumes structural responsibility for creating learning environments that allow students to repeatedly use English and accumulate meaningful experiences in their everyday lives. Such a transformation is possible only when the curriculum, textbooks, teacher training systems, and policy support are organically aligned, rather than relying on individual teachers’ dedication. Through the autoethnography of an elementary English specialist teacher, this study highlights everyday teaching practice as a key factor influencing the sustainability and equity of public English education, and calls for a reconfiguration of elementary English education centered on students’ lived experiences.
