내러티브 상담 연구의 방법론 분석: 질적 내용과 텍스트 마이닝 적용을 토대로 = A Methodological Analysis of Narrative Counseling Research Using Qualitative Content Analysis and Text Mining

국문 초록 (Abstract)

내러티브 상담은 내담자가 자신의 삶과 경험을 이야기로 재구성하고 그 의미를 성찰하며 심리적 성장과 정체성 회복을 돕는 상담 접근이다. 이 접근은 인간이 이야기를 통해 자아와 세계를 이해한다는 내러티브 심리학의 철학적 관점에 기반하며, 개인의 주관적 경험 탐색이라는 상담의 본질에 충실하다. 그러나 국내 내러티브 상담 연구는 양적 성장이 두드러지는 것에 비해, 연구 결과의 신뢰성과 타당도를 입증하는 방법론적 엄밀성에 대한 체계적인 점검과 논의가 미흡하다는 학문적 간극이 지속적으로 제기되어 왔다.
이에 본 연구는 이러한 학문적 요구를 충족하고, 특히 절차적 충실성과 윤리적 엄격성에 대한 평가 체계의 부재 문제를 해소하고자 수행되었다. 2019년부터 2024년까지 국내 학술지에 게재된 내러티브 상담 연구 논문 65편을 연구 대상으로 하여, 질적 내용 분석과 텍스트 마이닝을 결합한 혼합연구방법을 통합적으로 적용하였다. 분석의 논리적 적합성을 확보하기 위해 내러티브 탐구 절차와 질적 연구의 신뢰성 확보 전략을 포괄하는 ‘방법론적 성숙도 평가 프레임워크’를 개발하여, 절차적 충실성과 윤리적 엄격성을 핵심 평가 축으로 설정하고 각 요소의 구현 수준을 0점에서 3점까지의 척도로 객관화하여 평가하였다.
분석 결과, 내러티브 탐구의 주요 절차인 시간성, 사회성, 장소성에 대한 절차적 충실성 실천 수준은 평균 60.8%로, '경험', '정체성', '변화'와 같은 내러티브 핵심 개념을 중심으로 연구의 본질에 충실함을 보여주었다. 그러나 윤리적 엄격성의 평균 실천 수준은 37.9%로 나타나, 타 분야 질적 연구의 일반적 수준보다 낮게 보고되었다. 특히 감사 추적부정적 사례 분석과 같은 연구자의 확증 편향을 통제하고 해석의 다각성을 확보하는 심층 검증 절차의 실천이 제한적인 것으로 확인되었다. 이는 내러티브 연구가 자칫 연구자 중심의 특정 관점에 머물거나, 내담자 경험의 왜곡을 방지하는 데 미흡할 수 있음을 시사한다. 텍스트 마이닝 결과에서도 '경험', '변화', '정체성'이 핵심 키워드로 도출되어 주요 질적 분석 결과를 교차적으로 지지하였다.
본 연구는 국내 내러티브 상담 연구의 방법론적 엄밀성을 절차적 충실성과 윤리적 엄격성의 두 축으로 실증적으로 진단하고, 질적 연구 방법의 투명성과 재현 가능성을 높일 수 있는 새로운 평가 준거를 제시했다는 점에서 학문적 의의를 갖는다. 후속적으로는 윤리적 엄격성 강화를 위한 제도적 방안으로 연구 윤리 소위원회 구성 및 보고 양식 표준화를 제안하였으며, 교육적 방안으로 대학원 과정 내 관계적 윤리 및 동료 디브리핑 실습 과목 개설과 같은 구체적이고 실천적인 개선 방향을 제시함으로써 내러티브 상담 연구의 질적 발전에 기여하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Narrative counseling is an approach that helps clients achieve psychological growth and identity restoration by reconstructing their lives and experiences into stories and reflecting on their meaning. This approach is grounded in the philosophical perspective of narrative psychology—that humans understand the self and the world through stories—and is inherently suited for exploring the nature of counseling centered on individual subjective experience. However, despite the quantitative growth of domestic narrative counseling research, there has been a persistent academic gap due to the lack of systematic review and discussion regarding the methodological rigorrequired to establish the reliability and validity of research findings.
This study was thus conducted to meet this academic demand and specifically address the problem of the absence of an assessment framework for procedural fidelity and ethical rigor. A mixed-methods approach, combining Qualitative Content Analysisand Text Mining, was applied to 65 narrative counseling research paperspublished in Korean academic journals from 2019 to 2024. To ensure the logical adequacy of the analysis, a 'Methodological Maturity Assessment Framework'was developed, integrating narrative inquiry procedures with qualitative research trustworthiness strategies. This framework set procedural fidelityand ethical rigoras key assessment axes, evaluating the implementation level of each element on a 0-to-3-point scale.
The analysis results showed that the level of procedural fidelity—related to the core narrative procedures of temporality, sociality, and place—averaged 60.8%.
This confirmed the essential fidelity of the research, centering on key narrative concepts such as 'experience,' 'identity,' and 'change.' However, the average implementation level of ethical rigorwas 37.9%, reported as lower than the general level observed in qualitative research in other fields. Specifically, the practice of in-depth verification procedures, such as audit trailsand negative case analysis(essential for controlling researcher confirmation bias and securing interpretative diversity), was limited. The Text Mining results supported the qualitative findings, with 'experience,' 'change,' and 'identity' emerging as central keywords.
This study holds academic significance by empirically diagnosing the methodological rigorof domestic narrative counseling research based on the two axes of procedural fidelity and ethical rigor, and by proposing a new assessment standardto enhance the transparency and reproducibility of qualitative research methods. Furthermore, it suggests concrete and practical avenues for improvement, such as the institutional measures of establishing an Institutional Research Ethics Subcommittee and standardizing reporting formats, and the educational measure of opening graduate-level courses on relational ethics and peer debriefing practice.
