This study was conducted to overcome the spatial and economic constraints inherent in full-scale fire tests and to quantitatively investigate the impact of ceiling height on the activation time of fire detectors. To this end, PyroSim, a 3D modeling tool based on the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) capable of precisely representing the physical behavior of flame, heat, and smoke spread, was utilized. This study employed PyroSim to reproduce a high-ceiling warehouse environment of less than 8 meters, a condition difficult to implement in physical experiments, and analyzed the response characteristics of rate-of-rise and fixed-temperature heat detectors. Fire scenarios were constructed based on the Heat Release Rate (HRR) growth curve of wood pallets, and responsiveness was evaluated focusing on the temporal and thermal variations in the transfer of heat and smoke to the detectors during the fire growth stage. To ensure accurate input parameters for the detectors, sensitivity tests complying with type approval standards were conducted in parallel. To ensure the accuracy of detector input parameters, sensitivity tests complying with type approval standards were conducted on two types of rate-of-rise spot detectors and one type of fixed-temperature spot detector widely used in Korea. Furthermore, a plunge test apparatus provided by the manufacturer was utilized to empirically measure the activation time, activation temperature, and Response Time Index (RTI) under controlled conditions of temperature rise rate and airflow velocity. As a result, the RTI was determined to be approximately 90.7 (m·s)1/2 for the rate-of-rise detector and 47.6 (m·s)1/2 for the fixed-temperature detector and these values were applied as primary input variables for the PyroSim simulation. The simulation was configured with mounting heights ranging from 2.5 m to 7.5 m at 0.5 m intervals to verify the effect of installation height on detector operational characteristics. The analysis revealed that activation times were delayed as ceiling height increased across all detector types. In the case of the rate-of-rise spot detector, the activation time was 123.2 seconds at 2.5 m, but delayed by approximately 80.7 seconds to 203.9 seconds at 7.5 m, with the activation temperature decreasing by about 6.3 Similarly, the fixed-temperature spot detector exhibited a delay of approximately 77.1 seconds, shifting from 142.3 seconds at 2.5 m to 219.4 seconds at 7.5 m based on a set point of 70 ℃. These results indicate that the delayed response is attributed to the retarded arrival of the rising thermal plume and smoke layer, as well as increased heat loss in the upper air layer as the ceiling height increases. Current NFPC 203 and NFTC 203 standards maintain a prescriptive design approach that suggests only area-based criteria for detector installation, thereby failing to adequately account for the activation delay characteristics observed in high-ceiling structures. The findings of this study empirically verify these limitations, demonstrating that the application of simple area-based criteria can adversely affect the reliability of fire alarms and the assurance of evacuation safety. Accordingly, based on the quantitative disparities in detector activation times by ceiling height, this study advocates for the necessity of a Performance-Based Design(PBD) approach to enhance the early warning performance of high-ceiling structures. Specifically, it proposes refined installation spacing strategies that reflect ceiling height and heat transfer characteristics, the introduction of high-sensitivity and fast-response detectors, and integrated detection design strategies. Future research is imperative to establish scientific and performance-based detector installation standards for high-ceiling and special structures through comprehensive simulations that include diverse environmental factors such as combustible types, fire growth rates, and ventilation conditions. Such research will serve as fundamental data for improving practical design protocols and securing fire safety by contributing to the verification of fire detector efficiency and the enhancement of early warning reliability.
