The purpose of this study was to analyze the structural relationships
among family health, ego-resilience, and coping behaviors of parents
raising children with developmental disabilities. To this end, a convenie
nce sample was conducted with parents of preschool-aged and school
aged children with developmental disabilities. A total of 482 questionnai
res were used in the final analysis. The collected data were statisticall
y analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 24.0 programs, and the bootstrap
procedure was used to verify the data.
The findings of this study are as follows:
First, the family health of parents of children with developmental
disabilities was above average in mutual respect and acceptance, family
resilience, and quality of bonding, but low in economic stability and
cooperation, family culture, and social participation. Regarding ego-resili
ence, parents showed high levels of acceptance and optimism, but low
levels of emotional control, interpersonal relationships, satisfaction and
gratitude, and vitality. Regarding coping behaviors, parents showed high
levels of active problem-solving and strengthening marital cooperation
for their children with disabilities, but low levels of self-actualization
and the pursuit of social and emotional support. Second, analyses based
on sociodemographic characteristics of parents and children revealed no
significant differences in family health, ego-resilience, or coping behaviors
based on parental and child gender. Parental education level showed sig
nificant differences in ego-resilience and coping behaviors, but no differ
ences in family health. Significant differences were found in all three
variables, including family structure, child school grade, and disability
type. Regarding disability severity, significant differences were found
only in family health and ego-resilience, while no significant differences
were found in coping behaviors.
Third, family health not only directly influences parental coping beha
viors but also serves as a key variable that exerts an indirect influence
mediated by ego-resilience.
Fourth, the family health of parents of students with developmental
disabilities not only directly influences coping behaviors but also exerts
an indirect influence mediated by ego-resilience, confirming it as a key
factor strengthening the relationship between family health and coping
behaviors.
These findings empirically confirm that family health and ego-resilien
ce are important factors in explaining coping behaviors in parents of
students with developmental disabilities. In particular, family health is
a key foundation for flexible responses to behavioral challenges in
children with developmental disabilities, and ego-resilience acts as a
positive force, mediating this, helping parents raise their children more
actively and effectively.
This study is significant in that it broadens our understanding of the
characteristics of families with developmental disabilities and the parents'
adaptation process, and provides crucial baseline data for establishing
practical and policy support strategies.
