This study aims to empirically investigate the effects of push– pull motivation factors on bakery café selection attributes among consumers during domestic tourism. In recent years, domestic tourism has expanded significantly, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, and tourism consumption has become increasingly routine, experience-oriented, and emotionally driven. In this context, bakery cafés have evolved beyond simple food service venues into multifunctional spaces that offer relaxation, emotional recovery, and opportunities to experience local culture. Despite this transformation, prior studies have mainly focused on customer satisfaction and loyalty from a foodservice or marketing perspective, leaving a research gap in understanding motivation and selection behavior within a tourism context. To address this gap, this study applies the push–pull motivation theory, a well-established framework in tourism research, to examine the structural relationships between tourists’ internal and external motivations and bakery café selection attributes. Data were collected through an online survey targeting adults aged 20 and above who had visited bakery cafés during domestic travel within the past year. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 28.0, employing descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, independent-samples t-tests, and one-way ANOVA. The results of the analysis identified three push motivation factors—self-actualization, escape/pleasure, and emotional recovery —and three pull motivation factors—attractive, practical, and cultural motivations. Bakery café selection attributes were classified into five dimensions: menu quality, physical environment, brand trust, SNS information, and price quality. Hypothesis testing revealed that both push and pull motivations had significant positive effects on bakery café selection attributes. Notably, emotional recovery motivation emerged as a key factor influencing all selection attributes, indicating that tourists perceive bakery cafés as restorative spaces that provide psychological comfort and healing rather than merely places for food consumption. In addition, attractive and practical pull motivations showed relatively strong effects on perceptions of the physical environment, brand trust, and SNS-related information. Furthermore, significant differences in motivation factors and selection attribute perceptions were found according to travel frequency and age, underscoring the importance of market segmentation strategies based on consumer characteristics. These findings contribute to the academic literature by extending push– pull motivation theory to the context of bakery cafés within domestic tourism settings. From a practical perspective, the study offers meaningful implications for bakery café operators and destination managers, particularly in developing menu strategies, designing physical environments, strengthening brand credibility, and implementing effective SNS-based marketing strategies in tourist destinations.
