Nongak(Korean traditional farmers' music) can be broadly categorized into Pangut(a communal ensemble performance) and Gaennori(individual solo performances). While Pangut showcases diverse formations and collective harmony, Gaennori provides a stage for performers to demonstrate their high-level individual virtuosity and artistic specialties. In the Honam Udo region, regarded as the birthplace of Nongak, many master Sang-soe(lead small gong) performers have emerged. Among them, Yu Ji-hwa, the designated holder of Jeongeup Nongak, stands out. This study examines the performance structure and musical aspects of her Swaenoreum(small gong performance).
In Chapter II, the study investigates the life and career of Yu Ji-hwa, analyzing the practical processes that shaped her works and performance techniques. It traces her journey from her initiation into the arts, her activities in women’s Nongaktroupes, to her eventual settlement in Jeongeup. Furthermore, through interviews with Yu Ji-hwa, the study identifies the various stylistic shifts that led to her current Swaenoreum, providing practical data to understand the performance structure and musical development of Honam Udo Jeongeup Nongak.
In Chapter III, the performance structure and physical movements of the Swaenoreum were analyzed. After identifying the overall flow of Yu Ji-hwa’s Swaenoreum, the performance structure of each Jangdan(rhythmic pattern) was examined. Subsequently, the movements constituting each Jangdan were deconstructed by beat, categorized into lower-body movements(footwork) and upper-body movements(Bupo-jit, or the movement of the feathered ornament on the hat). Through this process, the specific patterns of movement performed by Yu Ji-hwa in her Swaenoreum were thoroughly analyzed.
In Chapter IV, the study analyzes the melodic structure and performance style of each Jangdan. Based on the analysis of the musical structure, the study compared ten videos from different periods to examine the performance melodies, rhythmic execution, and Yu’s unique striking techniques. The results showed variations in the flow of performance over time, confirming that both the performance style and melodies for each Jangdan became more distinct and refined as time progressed.
In Chapter V, the significance of the Swaenoreum and methods for its expansion were proposed. The study suggests ways to take the segmented movements derived from Yu Ji-hwa’s Swaenoreum and transform them into expandable structures, focusing on both physical and structural expansion. Through this process, the study sought to expand not only individual movements but also the overall performance structure, establishing a systematic method for performers to create new movements and structures independently.
This study analyzes the process by which Yu Ji-hwa’s Swaenoreum in Honam Udo Jeongeup Nongak was transformed into a formalized work, alongside its performance structure and musical aspects. It is expected to serve as foundational material for future practitioners to understand and inherit this tradition. Furthermore, if in-depth research on the musical and performance characteristics of Swaenoreum from other regions—beyond the Honam Udo region—continues, the artistry and uniqueness of Yu Ji-hwa’s Swaenoreum will be even more profoundly illuminated.
