Focusing on 〈SireusilⅡ〉 and 〈SireusilⅤ〉 by Choi Deok-ryeol, thisstudy aimed to examine how the rendering of traditional Gayageum Sanjo is reconfigured and expanded in the contemporary compositional context. Based on the traditional melodies, rhythms and execution, both pieces show new expressive possibilities of traditional music through the modern instrumentation of a 25-string Gayageum ensemble. Therefore, the study divided the melodies into foreground, middleground, and background with segmented structure of the works, conducting a comprehensive analysis of motivic development, modal usage, and rhythmic structures. The research findings are as follows.
Firstly, 〈SireusilⅡ〉 consists of three Parts, A–B–C. Part A presents the basic mode through the repetition and transformation of a motive. In Part B, melodies of Namdo Gyemyeonjo and Choi Ok-sam–styled Jajinmori are integrated, and traditional rhythms are realized within a contemporary ensemble. Part C transforms ‘Puneun garak’ of Sanjo for cadence, which emphasizes a traditional atmosphere and a modern organization at the same time. In particular, throughout the entire piece, the melodies of the foreground, middleground, and background are intersected and transitioned frequently by part. It manifests in a contemporary Gayageum ensemble where the roles of the parts are not fixed but flexibly move even with the identical structure, and the traditional mode is restructured in a novel manner.
Secondly, 〈SireusilⅤ〉 is composed of four Parts, A–B–C–D. In Part A, the melodies of Namdo Gyemyeonjo and Ujo centered on C Boncheong are presented. In Part B, melodic motives are developed through a dialogic structure between the Sanjo Gayageum and the 25-string Gayageum, modulation(Byeoncheong) techniques, and a Jinyangjo(4+2) beat. In Part C, traditional rhythms such as Jungjungmori and Jajinmori are partially transformed, connecting to the subsequent passage. In Part D, the Jinyangjo and Jungmori Jangdan and melodies of Choi Ok-sam’s Gayageum Sanjo are repeated, enhancing the entire flow of the piece. In the work, the foreground is unfolded mainly in the Sanjo Gayageum, while the middleground and background are consistently expressed in the 25-string Gayageum of Parts 1,2 and 3 along with relatively fixed division of roles. In the traditional structure of ‘main melody+accompaniment’, the traditional Sanjo Gayageum acts as the
central axis.
Thirdly, a comparative analysis of both pieces reveals that they reinterpret the modes, rhythms, and techniques of traditional Sanjo as the contemporary ensemble not by simple adoption but by motivic development, modal transformation, repetition and expansion. It shows unity across the entire pieces comes to be achieved through the reappearance and transformation of the motives. In addition, both pieces create the melodic structures in which multiple melodies are richly layered by distributing the main melody, its supporting melody, and harmony or accompaniment across the foreground, middleground, and background. However, there are some distinctions. In 〈SireusilⅡ〉, rapid Jajinmori melodies, ‘horse-hoof sound’ and ‘Puneun garak’ are transformed into the modern language with the flexible roles of parts. However, 〈Sireusil Ⅴ〉 uses Jinyangjo and Jungmori melodies almost as they are and emphasizes the traditional structure of ‘main melody+accompaniment’ through a fixed division of roles between the Sanjo Gayageum and the 25-string Gayageum. In sum, both pieces reconstructed the rendering of the traditional Gayageum Sanjo within contemporary compositional framework, resulting in distinctive works.
In conclusion, 〈SireusilⅡ〉 and 〈SireusilⅤ〉 are works that reconstructed the idioms of traditional Gayageum Sanjo, in which they are grounded, into the contemporary ensemble, showing new possibilities for traditional rendering. It is expected that this study will serve as a significant material for the research on compositions bridging the traditional and the modern and be conducive to appreciation and performance of 〈SireusilⅡ〉 and 〈SireusilⅤ〉.
