This study aims to analyze Umu (Rain and Mist) for daegeum and geomungo composed by Lee Sang-gyu. The work is a contemporary composition grounded in traditional court music (jeongak) and is considered to have high musical value due to the effective use of jeongak-style sigimsae (ornamentation techniques) and instrumental performance techniques for both the daegeum and geomungo.
The research methodology involves an examination of the pitch materials, modes, and overall musical structure of the piece, followed by an analysis of rhythm and melody, with particular focus on sigimsae and melodic structures as elements of jeongak musical language.
The results of the analysis are as follows. First, Umu (Rain and Mist) consists of a total of 68 measures and is divided into seven sections according to the flow of the musical progression. The criteria for sectional division are based on the melodic relationship and interaction between the daegeum and geomungo. The tempo begins at = 20 and gradually increases toward the latter part of the piece, reaching approximately = 35.
Second, the work is developed primarily through the musical language of jeongak, drawing on instrument-specific sigimsae and melodic structures characteristic of traditional court music. In the daegeum part, a total of eleven sigimsae—including yoseong, none, nanilo, nire, nanina, nina, nerone, norino, tteo-ieo, chuseong, and toeseong—are employed. In the geomungo part, seven sigimsae are utilized: salgaeng, ssaraeng, seulgidung, jeonseong, chuseong, toeseong, and nonghyeon. The melodic structures found in Cheonnyeonmanse, Junggwanggigok, Yuchosin Jigok, and Jajin Hanip are reflected in the composition.
Third, performer interaction and breathing play a crucial role in this work. When each instrument presents a solo melodic passage followed by an ensemble section, identical or similar melodic material is introduced on the first beat of the ensemble. In addition, the use of junbak (elastic beat), poco accel., and the alternation of melodic material between the two instruments highlights close coordination and responsive interaction between the performers as essential expressive elements of the piece.
In conclusion, Umu (Rain and Mist) for daegeum and geomungo is a creative Korean traditional music composition rooted in the jeongak tradition.
It is hoped that this study will contribute to the further development and dissemination of contemporary Korean traditional music based on traditional idioms, and that jeongak-based compositional approaches will continue to be utilized in diverse ways by composers.
