This study conducted a comparative analysis of the staff of 〈Seryeongsan〉 of Yi Wangjik Aakbu, which is the first Korean traditional music score for Daegeum melodies of 〈Seryeongsan〉, and that of 『Korean Music, Vol. 5』 transcribed by Kim Gi-su and performed most frequently now, that of 『Victor49810-A』 which is gramophone recording released in 1928 and that of the National Gugak Center released in 1987. Hence, it aimed to examine the transition of the staff notation over time, investigating the characteristics and transmission of the main tones and melodies in actual performance.
Firstly, as a result of analyzing the similarities and differences in the staff of 〈Seryeongsan〉 of Yi Wangjik Aakbu and transcription by Kim Gi-su, both scores have the treble clef but show the differences in their tempo notation. With regard to the time signature, the reference note of 〈Seryeongsan〉 of Yi Wangjik Aakbu is notated as 𝅗𝅥, with the tempo 𝅗𝅥 = 50. Along with the key signature of a flat(♭), Im (林) is transcribed as G, showing that it is the score based on fingering without consideration of the real notes. 3·2·2·3 beats of the reference note are notated in two measures. As for the 〈Seryeongsan〉 transcribed by Kim Gi-su, the reference note is with the tempo = 45. Along with the key signature of five flats(♭), 9·6·6·9 beats of the reference note are notated in four measures.
Secondly, the study examined the main notes and melodies and found out differences in every section. It reveals that 〈Seryeongsan〉 of Yi Wangjik Aakbu underwent changes during the transmission to 〈Seryeongsan〉 transcribed by Kim Gi-su with the simplified ornaments and modified melodies.
Thirdly, as a result of comparing gramophone-recorded 〈Seryeongsan〉 and National Gugak Center-released 〈Seryeongsan〉, the frequency of main tones exhibits greater differences than those in 〈Seryeongsan〉 of Yi Wangjik Aakbu and that of Kim Gi-su across the sections 1 through 4. The main melodies show the differences in every Jangdan of the section 1, with differences in the “second”and the“third”Jangdan of the section 2, and overall differences in the section 3. The last section 4 also has differences in the main melodies in all Jangdan except the “second Jangdan”. These differences might result from the musicians’ discretion during recording. Nevertheless, National Gugak Center-released 〈Seryeongsan〉 has the almost identical melodic progression to 〈Seryeongsan〉 of Yi Wangjik Aakbu and that of Kim Gi-su, despite minor discrepancies.
This paper compared the staff of Daegeum melodies of 〈Seryeongsan〉 of Yi Wangjik Aakbu and Kim Gi-su, and also gramophone-recorded 〈Seryeongsan〉 and National Gugak Center-released 〈Seryeongsan〉, investigating their transmission over time. These serve as the significant data but there are few researches on the past Yi Wangjik Aakbu scores valuable in the musical history, the contemporary 〈Seryeongsan〉 scores. There are also few studies on 〈Seryeongsan〉 in 1928 gramophone recording 『Victor49810-A』 and in 1987 performance by the National Gugak Center. Therefore, this study has great significance and it is expected to be conducive to performance and rendition of Daegeum pieces as the primary material.
