This study examines the ways in which bodily images of Richard Ⅲ, a titular character of the last piece of Shakespeare’s early tetralogy, have been represented in British stages from the 1590s to the 2020s. Although Shakespeare describes Richard Ⅲ as crook-backed, limping, and withered, theatrical practices throughout the U. K. over the past four centuries have actively transformed Richard Ⅲ’s corporeal forms by deliberately omitting the physical features or re-embodying them into other forms of bodily configurations. Tracing these historical shifts of the representational practices and categorising their tendencies, this study rewrites a performance history of the forms and implications of Richard Ⅲ’s bodies as they have changed in response to paradigmatic shifts of interpreting and signifying anomalous bodies.
In the early modern period, from the first performance of Richard Ⅲ in the 1590s through the 1620s in particular, physical anomalies were construed as a sign of moral corruption and ethical deviance. Tudor historiography, which served as an authoratative source for Richard Ⅲ, was also grounded in this moral concept of deformity. It is rather plausible that Shakespeare’s actors reinforced contemporary logics that combined deformity and evil by providing visualised evidences on stage.
Entering modernity, with the gradual dismantling of the stigmas attached to deformed bodies, actors altered their styles from visualising Richard’s characteristic ‘hunchback’ into refraining and minimising the deformity from 1733 onward. It is likely that the shift was influenced by contemporary Enlightenment philosophy and the rise of empiricist historiography, which challenged the prevailing belief that Richard Ⅲ was in fact not deformed at all.
Richard’s hunchback—disappeared from the stage for almost a century—reappeared in London theatres from 1836. Its return appears to be a result from modern processes that reinterpreted physically ‘incomplete’ bodies into what is monstrous and abnormal since they lack productivity and thus fail to conform to the modern bodily standard. Richard’s bodies were then foregrounded as the spectacle of grotesque ‘freaks’ throughout the twentieth century, which gradually positioned the physical figures of Richard Ⅲ as those otherised.
From the 1970s, however, disability activists and scholars challenged the prevailing view that equates disability with an individual medical tragedy, urging an epistemological shift that disability is not inherent in certain bodies or minds, but in fact constituted by institutional, environmental, and cultural environment that unaccommodates and excludes those impaired. The social model of disability also prompted ethical questions within theatrical practices concerning the extremely othrised deformity of Richard Ⅲ of the past centuries. From 2017, actors who identify as disabled began to play Richard Ⅲ and are initiating discussions on agency and legitimacy of disability representation.
These historical transformations have positioned Richard Ⅲ as a problematic figure of theatrical history; playing Richard Ⅲ has functioned as a theatrical site in which able-bodied actors have traditionally demonstrated their own ability and thus perpetuated the ableist notion of theatrical acting. Contemporary efforts to reappropriate Richard Ⅲ as ‘crip’ therefore could offer a critical point for other current practices of representing marginalised bodies. By foregrounding the fact that Richard Ⅲ’s bodies have always been a culturally-constructed, arbitrary, and mutable frame, this study suggests that discourses on bodily representation should proceed towards resistant practices that challenge the essentialist ideas behind theatrical adversary system and expand the possibilities of disability theatre.
