This study aims to present a facial muscle training methodology for utilizing actors' facial expressions as sophisticated acting tools in visual media performance. While conventional acting education has regarded facial expressions as natural byproducts of emotion, this research highlights the necessity of systematic training for establishing a neutral state of facial muscles and their smooth use, control, and maintenance, supported by contemporary psychological research on facial feedback effects.
The research methodology involves classifying core facial muscles for each of the six basic emotions (joy, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise) based on FACS (Facial Action Coding System) AU (Action Unit) analysis, and developing a methodology for precise recognition and active training of these muscles. Workshops were conducted that combining emotion-specific facial muscle training, basic facial muscle training, and existing acting training techniques that were enhanced with facial muscle exercises. Practical applicability was verified through implementation cases during the filming of the independent film 'Hangil.'
The research results showed that participants improved their awareness of unconscious facial expression habits and acquired the ability to gradually control the intensity of emotional responses according to situational demands. Particularly in scenes requiring emotional transitions, facial muscle training was confirmed to provide substantial assistance to actors' rapid emotional access, situational continuity and depth of experience. However, limitations associated with short-term training were identified, and it became evident that the facial muscle approach alone could not achieve holistic experience in certain emotional domains, suggesting the need for organic integration with existing experience-based acting methodologies. The facial muscle training method proposed by this study functions not as a technique for acting emotions, but rather as a physical preparation process for actors to more fully experience situations and live authentically in front of the camera. This serves as another approach that complements and expands the existing flow of acting education, and is expected to contribute to broadening the possibilities for delicate expression that aligns with the characteristics of visual media.
