Acting is the conscious embodiment of a character through an actor’s body, voice, and emotions. Actors thus strive to portray a character’s actions convincingly, grounded in the work’s content. This requires a clear intention, achieved through selective and sustained focus on a specific object of attention. Such selection is fundamentally an act of directing attention; hence, attention and acting are inextricably linked, with an actor’s focus shaping the character’s trajectory.
In immersive content environments, however, an actor’s concentration is easily disrupted by omnipresent environmental distractors. This study investigates acting conditions and attentional disruptors in immersive content, focusing on the role of language—specifically the performative potential of negation—in attentional recovery.
This paper analyzes negation's influence and utility in attentional processing, proposing its trigger effect as a strategy for focus restoration in immersive settings. This trigger effect is rooted in the cognitive rebound effect of thought suppression and the brain’s negativity bias, which is tied to survival instincts, functioning as a stimulus that instantly evokes the image of the negated object. To assess negation’s performative potential, the study explores: (1) the acting environment and distinctive features of immersive content, (2) the concept of attention and its distractors, and (3) the need for attentional restoration and language’s role therein. It further investigates how negative expressions facilitate attention recovery, redirect focus, and enable performative application.
When negation triggers an image, the actor’s focus shifts accordingly. This redirection, reinforced by associative processes and priming effects, strengthens and sustains concentration. In performance practice, negative expressions were observed to redirect attention toward negated objects, proving particularly effective in the improvisational and variable environments of immersive virtual spaces, guiding focus toward unseen elements and helping concretize imagination.
The effects of negation varied by acting type and context. For instance, in states of emotional or tense distraction, it aided recovery toward the intended target. In situations demanding heightened concentration, it generated vivid images of imagined objects or spaces. Conversely, its impact diminished when the object of attention was ambiguous or when affirmative language proved more effective (e.g., for sustaining focus on already vivid or concrete elements).
This study demonstrates that negative expressions can serve as a valuable tool for attention recovery and that an integrative approach is feasible in performative contexts. By linking language—particularly negation’s rapid attention-shifting effect—to acting, it lays a foundation for broader application in actor training and performance practice.
In conclusion, this paper provides both theoretical grounding in cognitive science and practical insights into the strategic application of negation, demonstrating its significant value as a performative tool in dynamic acting environments.
