This study empirically examines the effect of dancers’ preferences for the components of dance music used in performances on performance satisfaction, mediated by performance immersion. Although dance and music are complementary art forms in the performing arts, the quantitative exploration of how dancers' perceptions of music and immersive experiences relate to performance quality and satisfaction has been limited. Therefore, this study aims to investigate dancers’ preferences for the components of dance music, their levels of performance immersion, and overall performance satisfaction, while also verifying the mediating effect of performance immersion in the relationship between music component preferences and performance satisfaction.
To achieve this, a structured survey consisting of 85 items was conducted among 200 dance majors enrolled at the Korea National University of Arts. The questionnaire included 40 items on ten components of dance music, 27 items on six sub-factors of performance immersion, and five items measuring performance satisfaction. The collected data were analyzed using frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, group difference analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and mediation effect analysis.
The main findings of this study are as follows.
First, dancers showed high preference for structural and sensory components such as "rhythm", "musical form", "timbre" and reported strong immersive experiences such as "emotional resonance" and "transcendence/sublimation" during performances.
Second, preferences for the components of dance music showed a significant positive correlation with performance immersion.
Third, performance immersion was found to significantly predict performance satisfaction. Notably, the preference for dance music components did not directly affect performance satisfaction, but formed a significant path only through the full mediating effect of performance immersion.
Based on these findings, the study suggests the need to interpret the role of music in dance performances not merely as background but as a psychological and emotional motivator. It also provides empirical evidence that music design, considering dancers’ immersion and satisfaction, can contribute to enhancing the quality of performances. This research holds both academic and practical significance and may serve as foundational data to improve collaboration between musicians and dancers in the creation of dance music, education, and performance planning.
