This study explores the critical discussions surrounding the ‘interdisciplinary approach’ in musicology. Today, while interdisciplinarity is accepted as obvious and frequently invoked, in actual research contexts, it is often employed instrumentally without profound reflection or understood merely as a technique for methodological expansion. However, interdisciplinary approaches were proposed amidst rigorous questions and debates regarding the subject of the study, music. Therefore, in this paper, ‘interdisciplinarity’ is examined as a concept that goes beyond a methodological alliance between disciplines to reflect on the academic demarcation within musicology and evoke the process of discussions that have pursued comprehensive music research.
Musicology, which emerged in an era when discipline was expected to be grounded in empirical laws and systematic frameworks, adopted objective analysis and text-centered scholarship as its primary methodologies. However, there were arguments that such approaches alone could not sufficiently explain music, a perspective closely linked to the complexity of human agency underlying musical behavior. This thesis investigates how these concerns were articulated within musicology through the discussions of major scholars. It investigates the debate between Marcia Herndon and Mieczyslaw Kolinski, focusing on critiques of the assumptions and authority underlying sound analysis once regarded as neutral, and reviews the cognitive research proposed by Herndon. It then explores the biases embedded in text-centered analysis, the concept of musical “work,” and historical narratives through the writings of Leo Treitler, Gary Tomlinson, and Richard Taruskin. Furthermore, through the discussions of Charles Seeger, Gilbert Chase, and John Blacking, this study highlights the understanding of music not as a fixed object, but as a form of human behavior.
These scholars shared a view of music as a dynamic human practice rather than a static entity. From this perspective, the necessity of an interdisciplinary research in musicology can be understood as an effort to comprehensively understand the complex contexts of human life for a deep contemplation of music.
