Kang Tae-hong and Shim Sang-geon were prominent masters actively performing both gayageum vocal music (gayageum byeongchang) and instrumental music in the early 20th century. While considerable research has been conducted on sanjo and bongjangchwi, which were widely performed at the time, studies focusing specifically on 〈Saetaryeong〉 and 〈Bongjangchwi〉, which share common thematic material, remain limited. This study analyzes the melodies, rhythms, scales, ornaments (sikimsae), and bird-song motifs (saesori seonyulhyeong) of two pieces directly transcribed by the author, aiming to elucidate both their interrelation and the distinct characteristics of each piece.
First, the life and musical activities of the two performers were examined. Data were collected and organized from concert performances, sound recordings, and broadcast archives. For analytical criteria, in gayageum byeongchang, cadential points were identified based on lyrical units, whereas in instrumental music, melodic cadences were used to delineate sections. Rhythm was classified into triple meter, duple meter, and mixed meter. The relationship between the two pieces was examined through comparisons of scale structure, cadences, shared and similar melodic motifs, ornaments, and bird-song motifs.
The results indicate that both pieces employ g-boncheong gyemyeonjo and pyeongjo modes; however, except for Kang Tae-hong’s 〈Saetaryeong〉, the other pieces exhibit a mixture of gyemyeonjo and pyeongjo, with a generally pyeong-gye-myeon tonal tendency. Cadences in both pieces are centered around the main tone (g), and short cadences frequently occur. While partial melodic progressions show some similarity, Shim Sang-geon’s 〈Saetaryeong〉 primarily develops in pyeongjo, whereas 〈Bongjangchwi〉 develops in gyemyeonjo, demonstrating differences in the treatment of the note a. Ornamentation is characterized by appoggiaturas and staccato, and bird-song motifs appear in the high register in both pieces. 〈Bongjangchwi〉 features a call-and-response structure among the gayageum and other instruments, with bird-song motifs repeated for more than two sections, heightening the melodic intensity before transitioning to sequential descending passages to relax the musical atmosphere. Performer-specific techniques include Kang Tae-hong’s frequent use of various ornaments and syncopated rhythms, particularly the independent use of the consordino (c.s.) technique in 〈Bongjangchwi〉, whereas Shim Sang-geon’s performance is characterized by a mixture of pyeongjo and gyemyeonjo, creating a more diverse expressive atmosphere.
Regarding musical individuality, 〈Saetaryeong〉 in gayageum byeongchang exhibits mid-range melodic development and consistent mid-g tone cadences based on lyrical units, whereas 〈Bongjangchwi〉 as an instrumental piece features high-register bird-song motifs exchanged in a dialogic manner among instruments.
This study demonstrates that 〈Saetaryeong〉 and 〈Bongjangchwi〉 share thematic material and exhibit consistent structural progression. Furthermore, elucidating the relationship between the two pieces provides a foundation for examining and enhancing accessibility to untransmitted forms of 〈Bongjangchwi〉, and serves as a reference for future creative works in both instrumental and vocal music based on avian motifs.
