〈별우조타령〉의 음악적 구조는 악곡의 숨표를 기준으로 악구를 나누었을 때 제1장(a + b + c + c + c + d) - 제2장(a1 + a2 + b1 + e + f + f1 + b2 + b3 + e1 + f2 + f3 + g + g1 + g2 + g3 + h + i) - 제3장(j + j + k + l + l1) - 제4장 (a3 + k + l + l1)이다.

Byeolujotaryeong is an instrumental piece derived from Taryeong of Yeongsanhoesang, a representative suite of Jeongak. It belongs in Chiwtagyesu, in which the piri leads the principal melodic line. Unlike other pieces within the same group, Byeolujotaryeong employs a distinctive piri performance technique in which the pitch is lowered by partially covering each finger hole individually. This study seeks to examine the musical characteristics of Byeolujotaryeong through a comparative analysis of the piri melodies in Byeolujotaryeong and the Taryeong of Yeongsanhoesang.
The melodic components and characteristics of the piri parts in both pieces are analyzed from a compositional perspective, after which their correlations are identified. Furthermore, the study explores how the distinctive qualities of the piri are expressed in the formation of new melodies through modulation. The findings are summarized as follows.
First, the pitch materials of Byeolujotaryeong consist of 㑖(A𝄬3), 㑣(B𝄬3), 㑲(C4), 㒇(D𝄬4), 黃(E𝄬4), 太(F4), 夾(G𝄬4), 仲(A𝄬4), 林(B𝄬4), and 無(D𝄬5). Among these, the principal tones are 㑖, 㑣, 㑲, 黃, 太, 仲, 林, and 無, excluding 㒇 and 夾, which appear only in the piri melody of the second chapter. In contrast, the pitch materials of the Taryeong in Yeongsanhoesang are 㑣(B𝄬3), 㑲(C4), 黃(E𝄬4), 太(F4), 仲(A𝄬4), 林(B𝄬4), 無(D𝄬5), 潢(E𝄬5), and 汰(F5) which are identical to its principal tones.
The musical structure of Byeolujotaryeong is organized according to phrase divisions marked by breath signs. Chapter 1 consists of (a + b + c + c + c + d), Chapter 2 consists of (a1 + a2 + b1 + e + f + f1 + b2 + b3 + e1 + f2 + f3 + g + g1 + g2 + g3 + h + i), Chapter 3 consists of (j + j + k + l + l1), and Chapter 4 consists of (a3 + k + l + l1). While Chapters 1, 3, and 4 share structural similarities with the Taryeong of Yeongsanhoesang, Chapter 2 diverges notably in its structure.
The most significant differences between the two pieces are found in Chapter 2. In Byeolujotaryeong, pitch 㒇(D𝄬3) emerges in section 2-B phrase f1 (motive g), and the piri-specific ornament seochim-pyo appears for the first time in section 2-D phrase g. Additionally, 夾(G𝄬4) appear only in phrase g1 (motive g1), a developed form of phrase g. These tones, 㒇 and 夾, play essential roles in the melodic development of Byeolujotaryeong and mark notable differences from the melodic development of Taryeong of Yeongsanhoesang. The presence of seochim-pyo, which does not appear in Taryeong of Yeongsanhoesang, and its influence on phrase development demonstrates that Byeolujotaryeong was modulated in consideration of the idiomatic characteristics of the piri.
As a traditional piece creatively formed through modulation and transmitted to the present day, Byeolujotaryeong holds both artistic and historical value. It is hoped that this study will contribute to a deeper understanding of compositional practices grounded in traditional Korean musical idioms.
